I have started a new entertainment center and thought I would try to post some progress pictures this time.

The wood haul, well not such a haul but it was very expensive this trip at Charlotte Hardwood center. I'm working on some more reasonable suppliers now.

Its all ripped and mostly sawdust now, but these came out of it.

Basically these 2 sides and faceframes will be the side cabinets for a bigger center cabinet. The large upper opening will be pullout DVD/Tape storage.
A couple of additional views for this are in my gallery.

More to come.....

Sweet! Nice work so far.

Just another look at that, and I need to build an assembly table like yours. You have TWO panels laid out on it!

Mark, are you still building this or is it complete? You have posts in your album of a completed one so I be a bit confused....

I take it the wood is cherry?

Details, details we need details. The woods looks like Oak to me.

I was thinking oak too, but then I haven't seen enough different woods to know much of anything.

Mark, that is looking good so far.:icon_thum ..........keep us posted on your WIP. I was thinking the wood was QSWO. Looks like some nice rays in a few of those stock pieces.

Re: New entertainment center in progress

The one in the in the Entertainment center section of my gallery is complete. It was cherry and presently adorns my in-laws living room.
I made a new section for this build called New entertainment center in progress. This is where i'll be putting the photos from this build.

This one is oak, and while similar to the completed one, will not be nearly as big and have no glass...heh she said she didn't want her mess showing.

The side cabinets are 18x18x66 inches. The center cabinet will be 21x30x70 inches.

Mark,

Unfortunately around Charlotte we don't have many options for more cost effective lumber. There is a company called A&M Supply that is a little better, but only by pennies a board foot. They are almost the same as Charlotte Hardwoods. If you find something else in the area be sure to let us know, but I have searched high and low. It looks like the best options are Catawba Hardwoods in Hickory, or Steve Wall Lumber in Mayodan. Both involve a bit of a drive though.

By the way congratulations on getting started on the project. Looks like it will be a lot of fun.

Nice looking project -- if it turns out half as nice as that other one in your gallery, you'll have a piece of furniture to be proud of! I'll be interested in seeing your DVD/tape storage ideas....

Your shop/project project takes me back to the days when I worked for a cabinet maker in WI.

4 people in the shop: Owner, his parents, and me. I was all of 16 at the time. Owner was a muttering grump and his parents barely spoke English!

That was an "interesting" experience.

Re: New entertainment center in progress Update

Lots of pictures this time so I just used links so those not wanting to see would not have to wait on the load.

Well I finally got some time to get back to the new entertainment center. I was really waiting on the wood, which we discussed with the beetles.I was however able to get about half of the wood without signs of any beetles, so I finished this then treated it with a borax solution. When it dried I was able to continue on.

Here is the first part, the pocket hole face frames. I really like this joinery for face frames ( though really need to practice my M/T)

I then went ahead and made the fluted boards I would be using on the corners of the main cabinet.

The next step was matching and making the side cabinet's raised panels.

After cutting the sides I decided to test fit the main cabinet and left cabinet to make sure the diminsions I chose worked together.

I think the dimensions worked, so off to the wood store for another sheet of ply. Hoping to wrap this up in the next couple of weeks.

As usual my photo skills leave alot to be desired, but I hope you can see the basic shape and form.

Re: New entertainment center in progress

Looking really good. Kinda similar in style to one I did for my house except I didn't do the fancy fluted columns. I assume that you are designing it yourself, if so I give bigger props 'cause that can be nerve racking, not knowing if it's gonna look right until you build it.
