So im finishing up a jewlery box, with vertical doors (like a cabinet).

When the doors swing shut, theres a gap inbetween about 1/8 inch. I tried for hours messing with the magnets for the best fit and thats it.

I can press the doors shut and they will stay flush but if you just swing them shut they have that gap.

Im planning on using a strip of wood on one door that overlaps the edge. So when it swings shut, the lip will cover the other door, concealing the gap.

Is that a good way of doing it, or should I just get a latch mechanism?

I told my coworker id have it for tommorow but not if i go the latch way.

edit: I dry tested the strip on the door and it will work. Its just a matter of appearance. Would a latch look good with a knob on each door. or a strip of routed wood with the knobs.

Could the screws in your hinges be sticking out a little and not allowing the hinges to fold all the way? Where is the gap? How are the door mounted? Any pics???

i went ahead and did the strip method.

The hinges are dead on, its the magnets im using to hold the doors shut. Next time ill use those press in types with the arrow looking piece that goes into the rollers.

Sometimes as a "quick" fix, you can "spring" the hinges. To do this, you slip something like a small screwdriver in the inside of the cabinet in the hinge - between the flanges. It can be tricky in some situations to hold it in place. Gently push the door in and it will slighty bend the hing a little and allow the door to stay flush aginst the case instead of not closing. This puts a little more distance between the two hinge flanges and allows the door to stay shut. Just spring them lightly and slowly. If you push to hard you will bend the hinges.

Andy, that is a dang fine looking box.:eusa_clap :eusa_clap I am extremely impressed:icon_thum How about some details about it. What wood, what joinery etc. You're moving up in the world...might be giving the "box master" a run for his money:-D

Looks great to me. No one would ever know the difference with the strip method you used. I actually thing it adds a better detail to the box. IMHO it probably looks better with the strip. Great work!
