I'm staring the hull for a 1/6th scale 30ft US navy steam cutter/launch (5 ft ) this hull is being built with the woods spec'ed in the 1900 plans,, a few full sized boat builders have helped me out with some harder to source woods, hackmatac and eastern white cedar.. I did have some white oak sections that had sutabile grain for the bow and stern sections, but am looking for some white oak for the frames and floor timbers,, I do relize that there will be lots of steam bending in my future.. the frames are done in each half, planning on bending 3/4" stock and then slicing to get the matched frame set 1/4" thick, the floor timbers are one piece,, the cross section is from the center of the boat and the curves get more extreme in the bow and stern.. to add to the fun this will be a live steam project..

That's quite a project!
I look forward to seeing some WIP photos.
What does one do with a 5-foot model boat when it's complete?

On my short list of projects. The Georgetown SC boat show this year has some amazing large and small wooden boats. I always wanted to build a strip canoe just for the experience but have no need for a canoe. This artisan built a 1/3 scale canoe that is about 4 “6” that suits the fin of the build but makes a nice piece to display in the house.
I look forward to seeing the finished product by TGHsmith

a little better Idea of the needs, looking for curved grain (limbwood, base or crotch) that will give me blanks that will be a start before steam bending,, I have the tools to mill up good sized raw sections by myself.. (chainsaws, planer, bandsaw, ripsaws) and access to a drying oven.. thanks for reading the long post.. photos of a restored 1910 40ftr, ash and cherry trimwork makes this a great woodworking project.. why a bought the byrne's saw and thickness sander..

Where are you located? Is Scott Smith anywhere near you? He has some of the best selection of Quarter Sawn White Oak available. Probably also has other than QS available if you're needing straighter grain.

I second Ken's suggestion of Scott Smith (located south of Raleigh in New Hill); also, The Hardwood Store (Gibsonville) typically has a nice selection of quartersawn hardwoods.

Green lumber might be even easier to steam bend. Scott Smith might just have something that was recently cut that would be great for this. Please check with him - nobody better in supplying Oak wood. Great guy to deal with. Wish I hadn't moved further away from him.

it looks like Scott Smith is going to help me out with freshly milled, air dried white oak that should steam bend nicely for my needs,, still mad that the big oak that fell across the road in the last big storm (and I helped chainsaw out of the road) was a red!!! I've still have lots of metal work to do..
