Need a push in the right direction

I want to make some sort of yard decoration for my gf and her kids. should i go buy a template, or just get an idea and cut it out. I took some pictures of my workshop. i will try and attach them or make a gallery

Michael, Wood Magazine has some nice patterns you may want to look at. I think you can find them here.

I would vote for getting an idea and running with it. Also you can find pictures in magazines of something you might like and have the picture enlarged a copy place and then use it for your template.

Believe it or not, Lowes has some pretty good plans, etc. for outdoor projects. If you are looking for something along the lines of an arbor, pergola, planters, benches etc. I would try their website.
