My turn to play “what is this wood?”

Came from a tree that had already been de-foliaged and cut into lengths so no leaves or seeds available. It came from a forested area, not a yard tree.

Looks sort of like sweet gum but isn’t because it’s semi-ring porous (sweet gum is diffuse porous)?

Not sassafras because there’s a clear delineation between the heartwood and sapwood - plus no rootbeer smell.

Maybe an ash?

Kinda looks like Persimmon. Just a guess.

Based on experience Pecan or possibly Hickory.

Could be ash, have a moisture meter? ash is very low MC when green

I would guess pecan based on the color splotching as I have seen that in pecan turning blanks before. Otherwise maybe elm or hickory?

Last photo looks more ash like than the others so could be lighting. But ash odor to me is extremely distinct like nasty sweaty socks or dirty wet dog. So give it a bit of sanding and take a whiff.

Nah, the odor it gives off while turning is pleasant. Nicer than, say, red oak. Maybe it's like cilantro tho - my "pleasant" is your "wet dog"

I hit some scraps with a propane torch to see if I got a strong hickory smell from the smoke. Sorta, maybe, but not a *strong* smell.

Guessing nicer than red ok is probably pleasant to me too Anyway, I’ve got pretty limited exposure to a wide variety of woods, but found pretty much all the fruit and nut wood I’ve used to be pleasant to some extent. Maybe once turned, it will reveal itself.
