Well, after procrastinating for long enough I finally turned something (not sure what it is) on Sunday. There are a lot of things I could have done to make it better, but I really was just trying to successfully get from start to finish.

Hey, that's not a whatchamacallit! That's the finest example of a thingamajig that I've ever seen! ;-)

Nice work, Cathy. How big is it? There are plenty of uses for something like that!

It's about 6" tall and 3 1/2 to 4" wide. If I'd made it deeper it would be more useful, but I was afraid of messing it up because I have unintentionally gouged the bottom of a piece and ended up with nothing. Next time I'll be braver.

Cathy,

Nice job for starters. Alot better than I could do as I have never tried turning but would like to some day! Again nice job. Terry:eusa_clap :eusa_danc

Hey, it is a start, and it is a whole lot more than I have turned. My master turning accomplishment so far is a miniature baseball bat.

Pat yourself on the back and keep it up!

I used one of those stick waxes - but there's apparently a little more skill required than I had. Actually I didn't get it sanded smooth emough so the finish only accented the lack of smoothness. Live and learn.

as a beginer turner i can't help out much but one thing that i have found with lathe work is that the usual grits of sand paper arn't enough, you need the fine stuff.

go to an auto parts store and pick up a few sheets of the finer grades not avalible at you local big box store 320, 400, 500, 600 for starters. sanding goes quick on a lathe so it is not much trouble.

if there are any dings or imperfections in the wood go with an oil finish instead of wax, wax that gets into a reces is impoible to buff out, os it just makes the impefection stand out more.

my long time hobbie is photography, so i might be ablbe to help out in that dept too, let me know what make and modle camera you have and i will be able to tell you how to get the most out of it.

Nice whatchamacallit/thingamajig/doohicky you've got going on there. Be proud of it. You should see my first try at turning a bowl. It won't be long now till you're a latheaholic (don't know where that word came from)!! Keep up the good work.
