After going through a terrible rash of Wood Guy Disease, I purchased this tackle box to store all my stuff for turning pens in. After I got home, I noticed on the top of it, the tackle box was called the "Bait Box". I thought, how true... this lathe thing sure has hooked me good.....

I think that Clay mania is rapidly becoming the diagnosis. Good use of the tackle box Clay. It's started me thinking - which is usually dangerous and often involves money! I think I'll prowl around the house and shop before I get too carried away - who knows what treasures I will find!

I turn a lot of pens and store all the parts in a most disorganized manner in cardboard boxes that were used to ship the pen kits in. Why I didn't think of using a tackle box to organize the parts I cannot say. But I will be shortly....I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the idea. Now if I can just find a tackle box large enough to organize my turning blanks and stick wood I will have it made.... 8-O

If you find a good way to organize blanks please share!! My blanks waiting to be cut to length are in cardboard boxes. Once cut and ready to be drilled, etc. they get rubber-banded or taped together so I can keep the grain match straight (I cut a lot to length at one time). I only drill a few at a time and then insert the tubes - again using rubberbands or tape to keep the matching pieces together. So I basically have three groups of blanks and would love a good way to store them.

Well, its been awhile since I turned any pens but this is what I came up with to store all of my pen turning parts, blanks, etc. Its been so long I had to dig this out of a dark corner of the shop and blow all the dust off of it. I plan to mount it on the wall near the lathe once I get the shop completely organized (if that is truly possible).

The top of the organizer is about 6" deep and lets me store all of my blanks by species.

The bottom portion holds six partitioned organizer boxes and each box is pretty much devoted to storing all the parts, bushings, and instructions for a given style of pen/pencil set.

Cathy, be careful of using rubber bands if you are going to store any of your blanks for a long time. As I found out the hard way they tend to fall apart and melt into a gooey mess:cry: . What I have been using lately in lieu of rubber bands in shop are those small elastic hair bands. They come in a bunch of sizes and don't tend to rot. I also use the ones with the balls on the ends to as cord keepers on all the power cords on my portable tools.

Now I guess I will either have to find some of the pens I turned in the past or turn some new ones so I can post some pictures.

Re: My new "Bait a Box"

Thanks for the warning about rubber bands. Right now I am not leaving them in rubber bands for very long but it's good information. I won't be home permanently for probably 1 1/2 years, so my lathe doesn't have a permanent home. It's been outside in the storage shed but hopefully it's coming inside today. It's too cold out there to work let alone leave any supplies, so everything lands on the kitchen table. I am using plastic box that has adjustable dividers (find in crafts, fishing and woodworking) for parts. We'll see how I can arrange it indoors.

DL your pen parts are beautifully organized. That said, don't go showing how nicely you do things and make the rest of us feel inadequate.....:crybaby2: :rolf:

I love your organization cabinet but I will take a baby step and just try to get the pen parts in a tackle box with drawers.....

My bait box has 3 of those clear, configurable plastic storage boxes in side it. Plus a few compartments for longer stuff. I think they are great.
