After seeing all the nice pens and other turnings I decided to dust off the lathe and give a pen a try. I had turned a few things before, but never attempted anything that I really wanted to turn out nice, always just playing around and learning. Here is my first attempt at a pen. I learned quite a lot on the first try, can't wait to get going on a second!! Guess you'd say I'm hooked on these things.

I'd guess it is maple, it is one of the blanks I won a few weeks ago. I found that once you do one of those you can crank out a pen in just a little while, pretty quick project. I'm getting hooked pretty good on this, and Klingspor is making a fortune. ;-)

yeh it starts out just like a moskito bite. DONT SCRATCH IT!!!!!:slap: soon you will have all kinds of stuff to do the scratchin with. and then you will need a bigger spinny thing and then bigger scratcher thingies and......:rolf: every kit requires a special PARTS LIST TOO!!!!!8-O next thing ya know there is no piece of scrap too small to part with and...... you are headed down a long slippery slope wearing vinyl panties soaked in oil!!!!.

enjoy the ride! see ya when ya git here! we are waiting. savoring the moment when we can sell you some of our spinny scratchy things so's we can get even more bigger fancier spinny scratchy things!:rolf:
Flat work has become a thing of the past before long and you will have to sell off the rest of your stuff to fund the NEW TOY......
but not to worry cause we will be there too to relieve you of all that old un needed stuff for a bargain price of coarse! before ya know it you will be dumpster divin at all the cabinet shops and furniture stores to find some missplaced wood thats JUST TOO DARNED PRETTY TO THROW AWAY!!!!:rolf: before ya know it you will give up shaving and bathing cause its cuttin into your turning time. :BangHead: you will lose your job and your family will leave town too! BUT its not too late. no sirrieee. but you must be strong! its a slippery slope indeed!:rolf:

I can feel the ground moving under my feet even as we speak, and I have already been in the never too little to throw away thing, thinking I'd get that spinny thing going on something sometime....my spinny thing is old and I figured when I got good at this I'd get a new spinny thing and some new scratchy things too, you guys are rubbing off too much!!!:rolf: But then again I've never had so much fun!!!

You got it, now see what you've started???? :eusa_danc:eusa_danc:eusa_danc

I wanted to anyway, but just needed that little nudge to get going. I guess we're all on that slippery slope to eternal wood shavings in the shop....

Those blanks work out real nice...I'll show them off everywhere I can and hopefully send some customers your way for wood. Now I have to invest in a pen kit company and make pens....what a chore to have.....;-)

Great looking pen!!! Jeff likes to feed the habit for others, but has somehow resisted the urge to turn to the spinny side. It's only a matter of time! :rolf::rolf::rolf:

You sayin' Jeff's the pusher man and stays out of his own stash?:rolf:

I think he'll start sampling his stash one of these days. I guessing he'll try "just a little". Then it'll be all over but the crying!:rolf:

Yes, Jeff is the pusher.....but he doesn't have a spinny thing?? Oh he's got to get one and try it out himself!!!:icon_thum If he does, he may slide down the slippery slope to spinny scratchy like the rest of us. This is way too fun!!!:rolf:

We've been trying for a long time. We haven't broken him yet, but it's only a matter of time.

That is your first pen?!!!!
Good night...I am still trying to make pens that nice.

And FredP.....
As for the vinyl panties soaked in oil.....
I think your monkey has confused hobbies again.
Either that or I NEVER want to know where you get your finish supplies from.

I appears from the picture you are off to a fine start.
Try framing the pen diagonally in the view window.More pen less background.
A few words on the kit and finish used would be nice also.

Well, here is another picture of my first pen, and first mechanical pencil, guess you could say second pen???:) Anyway, I tried a different approach on the picture taking, and different background color so hopefully it will be easier to see. The finish is hut crystal coat, I had no idea what to use other than that, it was hanging on the wall in Klingspor next to the pen kits. The pen and pencil are both mont blanc style. I miss drilled one blank so I didn't even get to turn that one. Other than that, maybe beginners luck?? I don't claim to have any great gift on turning.:drunken_s

Nice looking set of writing instruments. I have a couple of those pen kits. I like how yours look. I hope mine will be that nice.
