I have been considering either a floor standing mortiser, a slot mortiser, or a loose tenon system to speed up my projects. I finally ordered a Domino last week and it arrived today! I picked the Domino because it was cheaper than many slot mortisers, it will take up less space, and it appears to be pretty versatile. I like the fact that you can connect boards as narrow as 1" compared to almost 3" for biscuits.

I can't wait to get it dusty. Now I just need to complete some projects to pay for it. :wsmile:

Congrats Amy!
I'm sure you'll love it. Don't even try to justify it.

If you haven't been there, check out www.festoolownersgroup.com for a good discussion group and an encyclopedia of knowledge and experience.

Festool has these essential references which supplement the pitiful owner's manual:
http://www.festoolusa.com/media/pdf/domino_df_500.pdf

http://www.festoolusa.com/media/pdf/getting_the_most_from_the_festool_domino_machine.pdf

My experience has taught me to:

Push from the end where the cord attaches and not from near the switch and you'll get consistant mortices. Pushing near the switch makes it easy to rock the fence off square.

Test fit everything before you pickup the glue bottle. If you mess up it's easy to fix.

Take a handfull of Dominoes and file or sand down the sides by ~.5mm, put a big X on them and keep them handy in a ziplock. Use these for test fitting until you get the hang of it. The fresh out of the bag Dominoes are a very tight fit and don't come out easy.

If you do mess up: glue a Domino into the offending mortise, let it dry, flush cut it even with the edge and re-do it.

Good luck!

Thanks so much Mark for all the tips and reference material. My only complaint was going to be that I was disappointed how brief the instruction manual was. I can't wait to check out those links.

Amy, a most significant score! I'm envious, 'cause I've used one and they are "the bomb" for assembling face frames and many other things. You ROCK!

Nice choice Amy. If I was going to use a fancy schmancy jointing system that would be it.

But I must say, I could not help but observe the stark difference between your post and what a guy does when he even see instructions.

My only complaint was going to be that I was disappointed how brief the instruction manual was . . . .

"What are we supposed to do with this piece of paper with all the letters and cool drawings? :icon_scra :dontknow:

Maybe that's why women don't have to take it back apart after an hour and ask "Honey did this thing come with a DVD showing how to put it together?" Not that any guy has ever had to ask.

Amy,
Congrats on the Festool Domino gadget. I have read alot of reviews on it and it is rated highly. I also look forward for your comments on it as well as pics of your completed future projects.
When I first got interested in woodworking, boxes, cabinents and whatever, dowels ( a step beyond mortice and tenons for joints ) speeded up joint contruction with perfect alignments. 1970
We progress on, pocket screw joints, loose tennon joints and biscuits which brings up to date. Freud has announced a new tool which is similar in design to a biscuit cutter but has two drill bits for making dowel joints.
We have come full circle.

Enjoy your new tool, YOU ROCK.:icon_cheers:icon_cheers:icon_cheers:icon_cheers

Later,
Albert :saw:
