I have put photos of a couple more trivets in the gallery. I'll try to link them , here here, here, and here. I also did a Christmas nativity scene and finally posted it here . Thanks for looking.

Wow, Cathy those all look great. The patience involved in all those inside cuts is amazing. The need to get something done quickly is the main thing that keeps me from doing a lot of scroll saw work...that and the fact that I still suck at it. Beautiful work, you have the knack.

Very nicely done! Do you find people actually USE them, or do they end up as decorations? What did you use for stock?

I've never asked if they use them - I'm sure my mom doesn't. I use any "scrap" that's at least 6" square by 3/8" thick I can find. I haven't been gluing any up - I'm afraid that if they really were used they wouldn't hold up to the heat - especially if I'd cut a bunch away from around the joint. The first one in the category in my gallery I use only as decoration - some of the cuts left pretty narrow pieces.

Beautiful work Cathy.:icon_thum I really like that 3D looking one. All of your cuts flow so smoothly its amazing. I really noticed how nicely everything flowed in nativity scene. Thanks for sharing those with us.

Cutting time is about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. That increases with the number of inside cuts, decreased with fewer inside cuts. Sanding may be a little less or a lot more depending on the detail.. Prep depends if I have to cut and plane a piece or not. I haven't put any finishes on any of them (intentionally). So anywhere from 1 1/2 hours to around 4.

What has been your experience with spiral cut blades. (I have been meaning to ask, and don't recall if I have already done so or not.) I have tried a couple things with them, and was interested if anyone else has used them and what their experiences were with them.

My only experience was disastrous! Of course, I was new at scroll sawing, using an old craftsman scroll saw and their blades. I've heard that FD spirals are usable. It would take a whole different mind set - every time the blade touches anything it cuts. You'd have to learn to not turn corners but change the direction of the wood only, being sure you are in scrap wood or space when you do need/want to turn the piece. I'll probably try again when I get different blades.

Thank you. One of the funny things about these is that one of the reasons I am making them is trying to learn is to cut more accurately so I can do intarsia without it requiring years of sanding! I love being able to make something cool in a short time frame. Of course, if I can sell any along the way maybe I'll eventually afford that Hawk!

Beautiful work Cathy. I purchased a scroll saw last year but couldn't get the hang of it. I didn't have the patience at the time. Keep up the good work. You do beautiful work. Isn't it nice to share?

It really is nice to have folks to share it with. What kind of saw did you buy? What kind of wood working do you do?

Cathy, you make me want to spend every waking moment on my new scroll saw! I can't wait until I make something worthy if sharing!

Yep - I expect pictures soon! If pressed, I might send you a photo of my first ornament. It doesn't look too awful bad since you can't compare it to the pattern!
