I have scored some new tools as of late. I have been practicing hand cutting a lot of dovetails, and was starting to be limited by my tools. Here's some softcore tool porn for ya!

I like the veritas guide a lot. It's a dovetail marker and a saddle square all in one, so it makes setting up my lines pretty easy. The marking gauge is a cheapy shop fox, but it does the trick.

I had been using some terrible chinese chisels before these, so I don't have a lot to compare them to. But, I have flattened and sharpened 3 of them so far, and they take an edge well and seem to hold it decently too. Seems to be a great set for the price!

I also decided to invest in a decent set of machinist squares since my squares were so off it was making setup of my tools nearly impossible. These are aupposed to be accurate to .00063", so I think that's close enough for gubment work!!

I also have a crown gents saw on order but Highland hardware was backordered so it will be a week or so. I'm excited about that one the most because my saw is TERRIBLE.

Nice score Marco:icon_thum .............YOU SUCK! Do you mind telling me what you gave for the set of machinist squares? I have a set made in India and they aren't worth a darn. Let us know how you like those new chisels once you get a chance to use them for awhile.

I use Groz squares and they are as dead on as I can determine.
Marco, that's not a mini gloat, that is a full blown one..
YOU SUCK, that chisel set looks great, let us know how they do.

My only beef witht he chisels so far is that they are metric, so although they are close to their imperial equivalents, they aren't exact. Shouldn't be too much of a problem as I don't hand cut mortises, but a minor gripe.

I look forward to cutting myself many times with this set.,,and maybe a little bit of wood too!

Nice Marco. You are going heavy in the hand tool methodology. I did it backwards, too many power tools and not learning the hand tools has been painful.

oh, yeah YOU SUCK!!!

well, to be honest with you, a big part of the reason I am doing it this way is because of how small my shop is!!! If it were any bigger, this would have been a power tool gloat! What I wouldn't give to have a cabinet saw and a jointer and planer and bandsaw and yadda yadda. But if I bought THAT stuff, I would have no choice but to locate my shop inside my house. Don't think I haven't thought about it....I have a room that's 13 by 22 that I don't use for anything but storing stuff in. Talk about temptation! But yeah, so to satisfy my woodworking needs, I have been broadening my horizons non electrically

Nothing wrong with that at all, doing stuff by hand is very rewarding.

Agreed. I definitely get a lot of satisfaction from working with hand tools, and it's nice to be able to actually hear the radio too! But, I don't see myself becoming the next Roy Underhill either. Either way, it's good training just being "hands on" with wood in general.

Ditto on that. Marco if you need to use some heavy tools you are welcome to come out to the sticks here and cut your stuff up or whatever. It is a lot cheaper to buy rough wood and it is a quick undertaking to clean and dress it out, plus I now have finished my dust collection piping nightmare so there will be no mess.

BTW, you broke in that biscuit joiner yet?

Nice set of tools there. I am sure that it will be a great addition to what you have. I have also found hand tools to be rewarding. It's relaxing even though it can be slow at times.

Good choices Marco and I'm envious :jealous:

I have one 6" Groz machinist square and only my ruler gets more usage

Travis, I have definitely broken the biscuit joiner in! I actually mounted it to a piece of 3/4" plywood so I would get a more consistent cut than doing it by hand, Seems to work out really well. I used it to join the boards for the tabletop of the last coffee table I built. Definitely a huge improvement in results and ease over gluing up a panel with no alignment.

Well, my computer was having problems there for a while so I could only post from work, and on top of that I have been trying to study up some for the NC real estate exam, which is going to be a bear. I decided I should be responsible and not fail that so I can stop working for the state ASAP. Not to mention the odd woodworking project, mostly shop stuff, nothing exciting. But I'll be back in business soon!
