Greetings All,
I just added to the calendar the upcoming Mid-West Tool Collector Association (MWTCA) Meeting in Hillsborough NC on Jan. 14. For anyone not familiar with them, MWTCA is a non-profit group dedicated to the study and preservation of old tools, to study the crafts and craftsmen that used these tools, and share this knowledge and understanding with others. I rally encourage any one interested in old tools to come to some of our meetings, there will be other meetings throughout the year. The study of old tools and the old traditional methods has dramatically improved the quality of my woodworking . Any of the NCWW members that are interested can attend by simply telling them at the door that you're my guest.
Regards
Randy Osborne

Randy, thanks for posting this info. Where exactly is Hillsborough located? This sounds like it would be interesting.

Hillsborough is about an hour west of Raleigh off Hwy 64.
That really does sound like an interesting meeting and a very intriguing group. I am glad to see that the talents and tools of our forefathers isn't being lost.
Dave:)

Thanks Dave:icon_thum That means it is not too far away for me. BTW, I mailed in my check this weekend to join TWA.

Dave's been sipping from all those beers above his avatar! :drunken_s Hillsborough is just north of Chapel Hill and west of Durham. US 70 runs through the town and you can get to it easily from I-40 by taking the NC 86 exit. I-85 also passes just south of the town. US 64 is well south of Chapel Hill.
Rob
(PS - I used to live in Durham)
(PPS - Randy, sounds like an interesting meeting, but I'd thought this might steer folks a little better!!)

Dave's right, you can get there via 64 if you're coming from the east side of the world. From the west, I-85 is the best route, and Hillsborough is north of Durham at exit #164. I think we have 4 more meetings scheduled this year here in NC: April 8 in Charlotte, July 22 in Raleigh at Ed Hobbs nice place, November 4 in Charlotte, and December 2 in Wilmington. Our NC group is one of the most active groups in all of Mid-West. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you come.:-D

Oops! Rob is right, 64 IS way south. It's been 25 years since I lived in Raleigh.

Oh crap, I was thinking of Pittsborough (off 64). But the hour time frame is still acurate, give or take, considering local traffic. Nonetheless, it sound like a great presentation worth driving a little way to attend.

Thanks for the heads-up Randy. I hope to make it. Will there be any hand tools for sale?

Thanks,
Sapwood

That will be great if you can make it, you'll enjoy it. There will be bunches of old tools for sale, mostly old woodworking tools. There will be all kinds of planes (both metallic & woodies), chisels, measuring, marking & layout tools, couple of wrench tables, our resident plane handle restorer will be there with lots of rosewood handles & knobs. No telling who will show up with what for sale. I'm not sure if I'll take tools and set-up since I have to travel. Check out the calendar for January 14, I posted directions and more info about the meeting. I look forward to seeing you there.

Randy, you make this meeting sound like a "must attend"! I'm wondering if I can get SWMBO to let me loose! Rob

There's a lot of members down in that area, and it's usually a pretty good meeting, was last year. It would be great if you can make it. It's a pretty long trek from up here, so I usually go down on friday and stay the night with my friend in Mooresville. Makes the Saturday morning trip easier.

I'm planning to attend this meeting. Anyone want to carpool from the Charlotte/Concord area? It'll be an early one!
PM me if interested.

These meetings are awsome. I go to the summer one in Raleigh every year. I always come home with something. :)

I'm still planning to drive up to Hillsborough this Saturday with a stop at the Rocklear store in Greensboro on the way home. I can meet at the I-85/Concord Mills exit at ~5:00am if interested. Let me know. Would appreciate the company.

Hot Dog! I've got verbal permission from LOML to attend this gala event Saturday. Perhaps I'll be lucky enough to find an inexpensive marking gauge, knife, or plane and meet some more NCWWers ;-)

I know nothing about evaluating these items so if you see me getting robbed and beaten--please help

Randy, were directions posted to the location for this event? If so, where? I may try to shoot up there Saturday as well.

Roger, if I can make it, maybe you and I can get robbed together.

Great, I feel safer already. No doubt you'll bring the necessary firepower :eusa_shhh
Now we just need to find a hand tool mentor :eusa_thin

BTW, I'm about a mile off I-40, 20 minutes from Hillsborough if you need an ex-jarhead copilot. 8-O

Mark, Roger, DL, (and any others), that will be great that you can come. I look forward to meeting you. I posted the info about the meeting including directions on the calendar. For some reason (operator error?) the calendar post ended up weird and has a heading "Counties", so just click that under Jan 14 and the MWTCA post should pop up- if it doesn't, let me know. I'll be glad to help you with picking out tools, there should be a good selection there. See you on Saturday!
