Hey Folks-Yesterday was action packed as the rear legs and arms had to be close to finished as they got glued into the seat: To start, I re-profiled my rear leg(again), this time to put a taper on the bottom that goes into the rocker-here's the progression:
the rough leg to 1st shaping

1st shaping to finished (you can see the taper on the bottom)-now it's almost ready

but 1st I had to put the "scallops" (in rough form) on the top/or horns of each leg(the section above where the headrest/crest rail will be-this was actually pretty simple:

I'll finish shape these once the crest rail get glued in.
Now on the the arms. I found my arms to be quite heavy so I took out a bunch of material:

I then taped off(another great use for painters tape) the hard lines that I wanted to keep and rasped the final shape out:

Now I've been using the rasp since the beginning of this class(before then I didn't own one) and yesterday was the 1st day I actually "got it" and the way to use it finally made since
Now on to drilling the holes for the screws:
Here's one of my MISTAKES: I drilled the hole in the wrong place (the top one shouldn't be there)

so how to fix it? just made both legs match:

These will be plugged later on (heck most people will think it was meant to be that way:wink_smil)
Here's more drilling-the arms into the rear legs:

and here's the legs into the seat:

Now it was ready for glue up:

I put it all together-waxed the screws(the still made that TORTURED sound when driving-but none broke) and drove the screws home:

And here's what she looked like as of 11:30 last night:

(notice the Roubo top is still getting a workout)

Today I get to shape/refine the joints so they are smooth and flow, then finish rough shaping the crest rail and final sand the spindles in anticipation of gluing in the crest rail, hopefully this eve.

Sorry for the length but this was an action packed day-worked from 7:AM to 11:30 pm.

:BangHead::BangHead::BangHead:clamps-clamps-why do I never have enough clamps

Man...every one of your posts makes me wish that much more that I had taken the class, maybe next time.

You're rocker is looking great, even w/ the design enhancements :-D

Mike, you need to slow down a bit with the glueup.

You really wanted to work the front legs to seat intersections to a finished level before gluing in the arms and back legs. You can still shape them with the back legs in, but it is soooo much easier if you do this before hand. You'll just have to work a bit harder.:) Please remember the golden rule, the more you can shape and sand before glue up the better.

Even today I spend many many hours shaping intersections and sanding before the next glueup step. I would have put in at least 4 hrs on the front leg to seat intersections before thinking about the back legs. Flowing the legs into the seat really makes a difference in the look of chair. It is probably my favorite part of the shaping process.

Be sure to shape all the intersections you have now.... that is 6 in total top and bottom and sand to final level before pushing forward with glueup. The more things you have glued in the harder the shaping is. You get the spindles in too early and you'll be upset when it comes time to shape areas. I only have the crestrail to back leg intersections left when the legs are in. That includes finish sanding....

You're definiely blazing on this puppy and are making good progress. Just done run ahaead of yoursellf dude. :)

I think Mike was serious about making it by Thanksgiving!!!!!!!!! :D

Good Luck,

John
