Making a small draw knife

This morning’s project was making this small drawknife for an upcoming project.

The tangs were cut from a used planer knife (about 15 mm. wide) freehand with an abrasive disk in an angle grinder.

Primary bezel ground to 25 degrees from the original 45 degrees. Ferrules are compression fitting nuts.

Practicing by rounding the end of a small square stick.

While in the mood, I made another one this morning using the full planer knife.

Shaping the blank.

First step was chucking the stock using pen jaws and drill a shallow hole which provides a center for the next drill and a guide for the tenon.

Next drill the tang hole say 1/32” or so smaller than the tang.

I used a Bedan to form the tenon. Note that the edge of the Forstner bit hole is a guide for when to slow down and creep up on the final diameter.

The tangs were simply pounded on with a dead blow mallet. If they come loose with time, I will just epoxy them back on.

I put a tiny back bevel on today and that works better for me with a lesser tendency to dig in with bevel up.

Oh, my son has a couple shofar. Interested in the holder. His birthday is coming up soon. Maybe I’ll make him a holder. Hadn’t thought about that before.
