Made something round with the new-to-me lathe

It's the one I posted about possibly cannibalizing and then powering with a grinder. It is powered with that for now:

The grinder is mounted on a hinged platform and I can move the belt to the next larger sheave without rubbing, so it is a two speed of sorts, but the one it is on is the right one for small spindle stuff. The tool rest is courtesy of Fred :eusa_clap.

That's just a chunk of firewood that I cut a small blank out of.

Wow! I bet it a good feeling to 'breathe' new life into old iron.

Not too mention not squeezing the life out of the old wallet!

Yep - even if I was using a better motor and not just a grinder. I left the other wheel on the grinder as a flywheel - keeping the momentum going once it gets up to speed. Interestingly enough, that old small wheel on the lathe seems tobe a higher quality stone than the ones on my $20 Big Lots grinder; I am sure you are shocked.
I don't use the Big Lots grinder at all if it is hooked to the lathe and I turn it on and off with a switch on a power bar rather than reaching across the spinning workpiece.
I do plan a motor upgrade, but I am waiting until after the holidays in case Santa replaces that piece of garbage I drill holes with (you can just make out the post, table and chuck of the DP in the upper right). The motor is fine; it's just big enough for some things I need a DP for and it has a little play in it.

What a neat idea. I don't think I would have ever thought about using a grinder to power something like that. I'll tuck that in the memory banks.

There are issues with high speeed and low torque that make it less than ideal, but it works.
