My son is looking for 1 piece of ebony 5/4 x 5" x 50". He tried The Hardwood Store and a place in Raleigh (not sure which one) with no luck. Anyone have a piece like this or know who might have one?

Was the Raleigh place you went Capitol City Lumber? (Next to the Arboretum). They have ebony listed on their price sheet @ $48.14/bf.

Thanks for the suggestion. They didn't have any that met the size requirements.

West Penn Hardwoods lists 4/4 ebony 3"- 8" wide and 2' - 4' long.

Have you thought about ebonizing oak or some other hardwood?

Must be a pretty special project.
I don't think you'll find anything that size outside of Cameroon or Nigeria.
That's about 26 bf and at $48/bf about $1,200

Yes, it's a commissioned project, a boken for a very high ranking martial arts person.

You should redo that calculation.
Sorry - My bad - When I plugged 50 into the bf calculator I put it in the "feet" slot rather than inches.
Interesting project. I knew there was $1200 in there somewhere . . . ;-))

I use lots of ebony for making my inlaybandings.
Please let me know where you are finding ebony at $48 per BF and I will go there. Ebony is now retailing for well over $100 a BF and to find an unsplit piece at 5” x 50 will-be near impossible, and carry a premium. World Timber Corp is your best bet. west Penn hardwoods may have something, but you will not get it there for under $300. Matt...

Matt, I was just going by the other posts. My search showed $120 - $130 per BF.

That is why I suggested African Blackwood.
