Okay, I know there are different standards for grading abrasives--and different types of abrasives. Sooo, does anyone know of a comparison chart? 8-O

diamond stones are fine, coarse, etc., going from about 250 to 1000.
waterstones are generally "finer" going from about 1000 to 6000.
wet/dry sandpaper appears to start at 400 grit and goes to about 6000.

But the ratings are sorta "apples and oranges", right????

Is a 1000 grit waterstone more or less fine than a 1000 wet/dry sandpaper?

Expectantly,

The grit measurement for Japan water stones is different from say, Arkansas stones. I think that I read that a Japan water stone with a grit of 1300 cuts the same as a 600 grit Diamond stone. Anyone, is this true?

A 4000g water stone is about 1200 wet/dry
8000g WS is about 2000 W/D
A "fine" diamond (red) is about 800g w/d or about 1000g W/S

What about micro-mesh, that's a different scale all together. What's MM similar to in sandpaper grits?

Micro Mesh is my new best friend for rubbing out a finish start at 2400 end at 12000 - glossy as you like.

There is an excellent article in the April 2005 edition of FWW on page 117. It discusses the differences in the grit sizes and the grit numbers for the CAMI and FEPA sandpapers. Not sure how you compare this information with the different sharpening stones, but I offer this FWIW.
