This is a picture that I constructed out of 2x4 strips and acrylic paints. It is a picture of my In-laws restaurant in Vass. This is called lathart. I am currently working on another picture of a golf course scene. I also like to do Intarsia and fretwork, but am currently expanding my shop to do bigger things.

Nice. The wood strips really give it a nice texture and feel. How big is the overall picture? Any pictures of the work in progress so we can see how you do it? Some of the background with the trees, shadows, fence, and then the strips going different ways really looks like there must be a lot of planning that goes into this.

I'll look for the restaurant next time I play at Woodlake . . .

Chris, that is really cool work and beautiful results. I have never seen anything like that. Do you work from a pattern? Have you ever considered doing it using natural colored woods, more like intarsa or marquetry?

Chris, this is pretty cool. I Googled Lathart to see what I could find, I came across several kits that looked pretty simple & easy (cheezy) and several listings that lead to postings of your work. You may now be famous in the art of Lathart, if Google is any indication :icon_thum

Back in 1996 I found an article in Creative Woodworks and Crafts magazine by a canadian artist by the name of Tom Bramhill. The article featured the plans to a lathart picture that he had created. Most of a his work had nautical themes and looked almost weathered. It was all really cool. For a few years after this the stuff just disappeared and I couldn't find anything on it. It eventually reappeared on a website called www.woodscapeartkits.com Some of the work here was his, but I don't believe that he is affilliated with them anymore. There is an original scrollsawn piece for each picture featured, and then they take this and program it into some kind of computerized laser saw to mass produce artkits for people to assemble. If you check out the link above you can get a little history on lathart. I assembled a few kits for my In-laws restaurant, and then drew up, and cut out one of my own, because I'm not big on kits. Dave, the dimensions are aprox. 18x30 on the one I'm working on now, and the restaurant pic is a little wider but narrower. I do like natural woodtone artwork and have done some Intarsia. Check out this website. www.intarsia.com This artist's name is Judy Gale Roberts unfortunately pictures don't justify what intarsia really looks like. If you like wood this stuff is addicting, and sells great. I have made about 15-20 intarsia pieces and still do not have one of my own. I am currently working on an intarsia eagle and will post it when it's done.

Farmtrac, the drawing took me about a week and constructing the picture took about a month of my free time. Not sure how many hours.
