Getting ready to cut up an 8' X 4' section of butternut and was wondering if a certain size is standard for carving blanks. Having trbl deciding whether to cut into boards or something else. Any thoughts?

Do we have butternut trees here?

When living in NC i did cut 2 butternut trees. I was hopeful but when i opened them up on the sawmill they were eaten up with PPB. worse than the worst NC oak i ever cut. I tossed both butter nuts - i don't think there is much of a market for wormy butternut.

I hope williams is clean

CrealBilly, I'm hoping that, too. I will find out tomarrow when I cut it up. It has been laying in the open for > 1 year but off the ground. Probably will just cut it into 2 and 4 inch boards.

I understand butternut is desirable for carving (I know I'd like to try some). If it were mine, I'd probably cut some wide boards for relief carving (e.g. scenes, door panels, box lids). I'd also do some narrower boards for chip-carving or carved trim work and some thicker blocks of various sizes for carving 3D figures.
