The first meeting of the Western NC Woodworkers will be held on Saturday, May 6th from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway, just north of the US 70 access point in eastern Asheville. We will meet in the Conference Room behind the main Gift Shop -- check in with one of the cashiers there and they will guide you to the Conference Room.

We will spend a little time at the onset of the meeting on the basic organization business, select some officers and have people sign up. Then, we will spent 1-1/2 hours with a program by Randy Osborne (Ozzie-x) and Steve Deweese (Steve D) on the proper care and sharpening of select hand tools. In the next week, I will be sending out an email invitation with driving directions to all NCWW members from western third of the state, to be sure everyone within an hour or so can make it to our inaugural meeting.

Hope to see lots of people there!

Congrats on the kickoff!

The program certainly sounds interesting and I know you are going to have a lot of talented folks

Hey, make a video so we can all download it :eusa_thin

Wishing much success! It has been fun seeing this start with just an idea and have it come to fruition. If you are interested, I have an MS Access membership program that I have been working on for TWA. It is still in it's infancy (sort of a Beta +), but if you are interested, I can send you some more details via email.

Rick,

I'm sure that we would be interested in seeing it. Is it a small enough file to send as an email attachement or would you need to snail mail it?

Thanks,

Steve

I believe I could "zip" it. Also makes a difference whethre you have dial up or some sort of high speed access. I will have to put together some rudimentary documentation to accompany it. Right now, it's all in my head, and boy is that a tough nut to crack!!!

Thought of something else - Microsoft has some basic templates, including one for membership applications. They are free to download. I downloaded one and placed in in the NCWOODWORKER Download Library. It is in the charts, guides and specs section, called Membership Application. You will need to use Winzip to unpack it. However, it is pretty straight forward, and I am thinkin go modifying it for our use "one of these days". Only about 200K zipped. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Looking forward to the meeting and I hope we have a good turn-out. How many folks we have planning to attend may effect what we do with the program, but it will definitely be an open forum where we all gather around and share ideas and methods. I'm sure everyone will have something to contribute and we will all learn something. I'm no sharpening expert but know what works for me. Since we'll have to carry in all of our visual aids and materials, we may be somewhat limited, plus we won't be able to make a horrible mess:eusa_naug ! Generally, the program will cover hand planes and chisels (maybe saws :eusa_thin ??), although this may be biting off too much for only 1 1/2 hours and I could easily devote a week long course on hand planes alone. We'll refine the program and agenda as the meeting draws closer. Sounds like we may be producing some amateur tool porn (for Sapwood), so that may effect what/how we do the program. I really encourage every one to try to come, and the meeting is certainly not limited to "Westerners" if anyone else down in the flatlands (or elsewhere) wants to come. :icon_thum

McRabbet listed me as a co-presenter. If anything, I will be serving in a Vanna White capacity as my knowledge on the subject matter could be covered in mere seconds. I'm looking forward to Randy's expertise and gaining some much needed knowledge in this area.

Thanks Rick, I'll download it and give it a try when I have a little time. I've got DSL so download is no issue.:icon_thum

Bump.

I just sent out a private e-mail to about 130 members who live in the western third of the state. Please send me a PM or an e-mail if you plan to attend. Thanks.
