Although I was able to produce a sort of decent rod with standard lathe tools, my skill level is too low and I don’t have the time or inclination to practice. So I came up with this idea using a router.
The surface is a little rough but this is cypress. It sanded out nice and smooth.
The only issue is the dowel is almost 1/16” wider at one end. This is an error with the fence. I plan on making one end adjustable do I can dial it in.
Anyway, it worked and it was fun.
This is what I'm shooting for:
I got the idea for doing fluted columns from Tom Laughlin (Epic Woodworking) and adapted it to use with a fence to create a dowel.
The surface wasn't great, cut a couple passes with 150 sanded it out to an acceptable finish.
Apparently the fence was not perfectly parallel to the center line. I plan to put slot in the fence and locking knob to make micro adjustments.
