I noticed jeff's signature line in his first post.
Jesus IS Lord and Christ (Acts 2:36)

Sent him the following pm
jeff, welcome to our little community.

I noticed your signature line. While I respect your beliefs and certainly wouldn't question them. I feel that it would be better not to include them in your posts. This is woodworking web site. Please refrain from using that kind of quote in your messages in the future.

I hope you will understand my position.

Thanks

We can discuss the why's in this thread

It doesn't bother me. But I agree. If it was something i didn't agree with, well, it probally still wouldn't bother me. I'm not easily offended. I mean, he's not cramming anything down someone's throat, or bashing anything or anyone. But, my opinion.

Oh BTW - I'm a little slow, and insom.. I just saw the Subliminal msg... made me laugh

what if someone used their signature to deny the divinity of Jesus. I'll bet then everyone would think they understood.

But really, it is more simple than that. Rigid statements of politics and/or religon have a tendency to start things that I really don't want to start here.

There ya go, there's a reason. It's your forum so you get to steer it the way you want it. Just to be clear, I'm not being critical - I think this site has been very successful at keeping the members on topic and well behaved, for the most part. I personally don't care if he said Jesus is Lord or Praise Allah. I just hate to see a person who's very FIRST post here on this forum is received with a message like that from the webmaster.

Actually, I sort of agree, but I wanted to let him know up front.

Now, if my wording came across as to harsh, then that's not what I intended. If so I'll send him an apology.

Did it come across too harsh??

Steve,

As always, the golden rule applies (he who has the gold makes the rules). I don't see the issue the same way but it's your call. If he were attacking a particular belief, being provocative or trying to use the forum to preach the gospel and win converts I would see the issue but a signature line like his is passive. People get pretty riled up about college football teams but we don't mind them flying their colors. I wouldn't be offended if someone's avatar was the star of David or the Crescent it just tells me that their religion is important to them.

Keep in mind, Jesus was a woodworker too so it is relevent to the site. It's water over the Dam now, so no biggie. You may well be going to hell for this transgression though:eusa_pray ***

*** Disclaimer, the above comment is meant to bring humor and levity to the situation and nothing more. Not too sure how to convey that accurately with a smiley in the right place:lol:

Yes, to someone deeply religious "that kind of quote" is probably a bit harsh.

I'll agree with everything said. you have a reason for this, I agree with your reasons. That being said, if it were me, and I got a message like that on my first post, I would likely be very timid about posting in the future. not that I thought it was harsh, but it would just shake me a bit.

You're doing a great job Steve.

Jeff after re-reading my message to you and discussing it with a few people, I realize that my choice of words was not very good.

For that I sincerely apologize.

Let me try to rephrase.

I would prefer that we keep explicit statements of religon, politics, etc out of our posts. Because on occasions, at other websites, such statements have led to quite a bit of nastiness between members

I hope I've explained my position in a more understandable way.

And again, please accept my apology for typing without thinking. __________________

just sent to jeff... I hope that is a bit better. If not I nominate insom to proof read and rewrite all my messages:rolf:

Cool on the repost. Initially, I disagreed with you but when you gave the contrary comparison it makes sense. We have some devout members (Michael Garner comes to mind) but his is always a positive.

But then I think again, and I am just thinking out loud. Stating your beliefs is one thing but slamming another religion regardless of which is definitively inappropriate.

I just soft deleted jeff..'s thread. If you look at the last post or two, you can see the thread was going places it shouldn't.

I agree that the last post was going where none of us wanted it to go. I also agree with Steve's position that this forum is not the place for any form of political or religious statements and I suspect strongly that Jeff was caught off guard -- it is too bad that Jeff didn't understand the very positive nature of the site and Steve's intent and be willing to alter his signature line. We need to let go and move on with maintaining a good woodworking site.

Speaking of troubled individuals -- I've noticed that dbvilla has not been on the site in the past two weeks. She and her husband had a rough transition and I may send her an e-mail to see if they are okay.
