Please don't laugh at me for asking this dumb question, but I noticed something while installing some hinges on a small counter top spice cabinet today in the shop. (I'm making 5 of them)
This may be a 'nit', but I can't keep from wondering about it. So here is my question.
The hinges that I am installing are 1 in utility brass plated rivited pin, that I purchased at the hardware store. There are two on the the door. One upper and one lower. I am morticeing them into the side frame and the door so that only the pin and hinge 'ears' show when the door is closed. The door is installed flush and with only a hairline crack between it and the frame.
Now these hinges have 3, what I am calling 'ears' that wrap around the pin and allow the hinge to do it's thing. One side of the hinge has 2 ears, top and bottom and the other side has only 1 that is the center ear and fits between the other two..
My question is - Is it better to mount the hinge with 2 ears on the side frame, or on the door? I think that it looks better with the 2 ears on the side frame. That way the center ear is the only one that rotates, but that is just my opinion. Maybe there is a good mechanical reason to do it the other way, I don't know. I do know, that witch ever way you do it, you should make both the upper and lower hinge ears the same! (right)
Anyone have any opinion on this? How would you mount the hinges? It's really bugging me, and I need to get on to other things. :BangHead:
