Identify this log

It was a dead tree that fell across a path, so I removed it. The wood is beautiful and the bark looks like cherry. The wood looks too dark for cherry, but it has been dead for years so maybe that affects the color.

Looks like possibly maple, maybe sweet gum.
I'd need to see more of the bark. Looks like it's been dead a while.

That's Larry. Haven't seen him in a long time but no doubt it is him. (sorry no clue but wanted to give this a bump)

Can't tell based on the stained end grain an partial bark. Could be dogwood or cherry potentially but without seeing the grain after it cut open there isn't a clear way to tell.
