I was able to clean up my planner. The shoe is now flat and smooth thanks to Doug at Woodcraft.

What? did you have to get the shipping grease off of it...that dang thing looks brand new.
If you get a chance, take Bill Andersons "Rough to Ready" class, you'll learn a lot about how to make that shiny thing sing.

Nice Job!! You really spent some time on that and it should slide like silk across the wood. Just oil and wax it heavily, otherwise my friend iron oxide will return soon.

I believe that the Rough to Ready hand plane class is two days over a weekend. He also goes over sharpening and tuning the neccesary planes. I think D L took the class and raved about how good it was. Bill is an excellent teacher and spends a good amount of time preparing for the class, inlcuding a multi-page "text book" handout.

Thanks guys,

I started with 60 grit on the flat granite Woodcraft sells. I went to a 800 grit then used a buffer to take the haze off. The shoe was in really bad shape. It had been used to remove nail heads through a painted surface.

I put WAY too much time in this but until I visited the Woodcraft store in Raleigh and got some good information, I did not know what I was doing.

The granite block made the difference.

I never thought of buffing. :eusa_thin

FWIW, LN folks recommend [SIZE=-1]camellia oil for protecting finish. I've used it on planes and chisels and it certainly prevents rust. But it makes them feel sticky.
