Ok, Do I really feel dumb. I was trying to lay out a close to perfect arc on eight pieces of wood and really struggling to come up with an idea to draw an arc to be band sawed. I tend to over complicate a lot of things. I measured, marked, drew, erased, redrew, and was really racking my brain trying to figure out how to lay out eight similar arcs. Then the LOML comes home and says, "WHY DON'T YOU JUST USE A YARD STICK HELD AT THE CORNERS OF THE ARCS, FLEX THE YARD STICK AND ALIGN THE CENTER OF THE ARC AND DRAW A LINE"? :BangHead::BangHead: Of course I did as instructed and the arcs are as close to perfect as I need them to be. The yard stick bent dang near perfect in the middle and made a real pretty arc. Man do I feel dumb.:dontknow: Just goes to show that you can over think a project and drive yourself crazy:confused_

I used to drive myself crazy envisioning laying out the arch on the headboard for the bed I am going to build. I have seen the various sine/cosine/tagent/measure methods involving multiple compass scribes presented in several places. THEN...............I saw someone use a clamped thin strip of pine to do exactly what LOYL suggested and my headache disappeared :rotflm:

Your STUPID LIGHT has same delay function as mine. I wish I knew how to get it fixed, so it would come on BEFORE, not after.

Been there too, Newtonwood!!!:embaresse:embaresse:embaresse:embaresse

Was walking through Lowes and picked up a piece of 1/2" PVC pipe and light came on :widea::widea::widea: Bought a piece about 4 ft long and use it (between 2 finish nails) everytime the urge for an arch strikes.:wsmile:

Don't feel bad............a lot of us have been down that road!

Glad you had your LOYL there to assist! A keeper for sure!

There are dumber ways. Take a piece of plywood, gently lower it onto a spinning dado blade. Scores a beautiful arc in the wood. Also dyes your underwear. :)

But, I did the measuring thing too, until I saw an episode of Wood Works. Certainly smacked my forehead that evening.

Believe me, I know how you feel. I have a fridge magenet "We specialize in complex solutions to simple problems".

The hard part to remember is that you learned a ton of stuff while finding a simple solution.

After I'm done swearing and cursing a universe that is so cruel, I realize how much I learned.

Then I swear a bit more :)

Did anybody else here take basic mechanical drafting in high school?

I still use the geometric constructions all the time. No formulas, just a straight edge and compass.

Here's how to form an arc through any three points.
