How I made this is a mystery?

Have you ever made something and can’t figure out how you did it?

Made this vase some years ago and planning to do something similar.

For the life of me I cannot figure out how I held it in the lathe? The base has a floating piece of Maple held in place by a segmented ring. There is no sign of chuck marks anywhere?

Scratching my head here?

I am sure Charlie can provide some insight...that said, your vase is beautiful, I can see why you want to do another.

WIllem,
1) That is a beautiful piece
2) I am glad I am not only one who can't remember how I did something...

I think I remember doing it in two pieces.

I think I might have used a jam chuck after the whole thing was glued together to do the final turning.

Have to do a vase and a platter for a charity event, will post up when done.

That sounds about right - they are usually done in two pieces and glued together. A jam chuck would help with the final turning of the glue line. What Charlie and Earl said about the waste block and face plate are also part of the process. They are both experts at this sort of thing.
