Hoof rasp

II follow Dave Engle’s twice a week YouTube videos and his current project is restoring two Yellowstone Park coaches from the 19th century. He often uses a hoof rasp which is a farrier's tool. I recently purchased one from Tractor Supply after watching how well it worked for him.

This door dragged on the thickish rug.

Removing this swinging door is difficult due to its weight and mechanism is not easy so I decided to try to make some rug clearance with the door in place. The spokeshaves did not do well on the end grain of the door stile (especially when working blind). The hoof rasp excelled.

The other side of this hoof rasp looks like this:

Bottom line: it cuts wood quickly and cleanly

I have my grandfathers and use it occasionally. It is very aggressive. It was made without a tang.

Now I know it’s name! I have a typical half round rasp but clearly this larger flat could be handy. Guess I should clean up the rust, was one of my grandfather tools I inherited but lost track until it turned up in one of my old cabinets at my daughter’s last year.

Hopefully this is the last rust riddled tool that I’ve uncovered.

TSC did not have the tangles model on the shelf. It would have been my first choice.

Been watching Engle's Coach Shop channel ever he started building the borax wagons. He gets a lot done for a one horse show.
+++ on the farrier rasp.

I have had good luck reviving files/rasps using citric acid solution.

I have oxalic acid, it’s a bit more aggressive. I got a 5 lb bag when we lived in FL since had a giant oak - the leaves left stains so I’d scrub down the stains with an oxalic acid solution before pressure washing.

…and a handle for the hoof rasp.

I have never turned a pen but pen jaws are surely handy for knobs and handles.View attachment 247314
Managed to split that one.

Decided to make a 5-ply laminated handle instead. Middle ply notched to match the tang taper.

After glueup, sawing the tapers on small bandsaw with a sled.

Messed up on the riveting but the handle feels good.
