This is my first post. I have been woodworking as a hobby for awhile. I would like to learn more about posting on this sight for things such as pictures. for then I could show you what I have been working on. The thing I am into now is making projects out of scrape lumber. Does anyone know of any projects to make from fire wood? I bought myself a thickness planner as a Christmas gift and I am fascinateted how it can turn old bad lookiing lumber from pallets that I have taken apart into really great looking small sections of wood. Anyway I am going to try to attach a picture to this if I can. I hope to be back with more of the things I do which are a little unusual but who knows: It may give others ideas if it works or someone can help me post more things.
My sight name is macdaddy and my really name is another Steve and I live in Richlands, well actually a small community outside Richlands named Back Swamp, NC --- no kidding.

Welcome, thanks for the introduction. Did you say scrap wood..I love scrap wood. Haven't used pallet wood yet but I do like to make things out of small left over pieces. To start posting pictures request an album, by clicking on other links and then request services and you will get one set up. The upload your pictures and then embed them in you post. There is a great tutorial in the FAQs section on all that (if it has been repaired, if not we'll explain more). I look forward to seeing your work. See you around!!!

Dave:)

Welcome to the site. The first thing you'll want to do is to check out the new member checklist. That will show you how to get yourself a photo album so you can upload pictures. Next, you'll definately want to see the faq forum about how to post pictures and uploading pictures, you can find that here. The next things, is to show us some of your work. We're all hooked on fine woodworking pictures. Pictures with tools are especially wonderful! I look forward to seeing you around

Welcome to the site, Steve. We're happy to have you join our band of woodworkers from across the state. As you may already know, be real careful with using pallets as a source of wood -- they are nailed together with spiral nails from a nail gun and the nails often break off, even in production. If you hit a nail with your planer, you'll ruin a knife (or knives). Likewise, embedded sand can do equal damage. I tried to get new pallets from several of the larger stores (I lived in Durham) and would select new, disposable ones to avoid embedded sand. The wood quality wasn't the greatest, but the price is right!

An electronic stud finder will help find nails, but doesn't penetrate more than 1/2 inch. A tool like a Lumber Wizard for about $90 will protect your tool from metal (but not grit). Just be careful. And hopefully, you can learn how to post some pictures and show us your shop and projects.

I forgot -- make bird houses out of scrap wood. The attached photo is a bird house buidt out of scrap wood; it si a blue bird house but as you can see the Jack Russell is very interested. I think a squirrel or woodpecker made the hole larger than is should be (1.24 inch diameter).

This is my first photo submission so I hope it comes throuh. I could not upload the picture must make smaller. Can anyone tell me how to reduce photo size?

Welcome Macdaddy. You have joined a great group of dedicated WWershere (myself EXcluded!). Lots of information sharing and always a helping hand offered:eusa_clap. In case it hasn't been mentioned yet, "No pictures, didn't happen", seems to be the motto around here:lol:
Now, let's make some sawdust!

Philip -- the easiest way to resize your graphics (this works with many formats, including *.jpg or .gif and others) is to use MS Paint, found in the Accessories folder of programs. Open your photo, select Image/Resize and select whatever equal percentages of X and Y reduction (keep them the same) to reduce your image size -- lets say 50% for each. Then use Save As and you can save the file under a new name or even change the file type to something you prefer.

To learn more about uploading photos or other files, read the information in the FAQ Forum on Photo Galleries. FAQs are also there to help embed pics in your posts. Good luck.

I saw short boards from between the center supports (I call them rails) of the palets. Prying the palets apart seems to always split the wood and I know there are no nails where I saw.

OK Dave I now have a picture in an album but how do I get it to this post?
macdaddy

First off, check the FAQs section, Insomniac has done a great tutorial on the subject. But basically you need to cut and paste the URL of your photo (http//ncww'er..) into the box provided when you click on the Insert Image button in the top right (looks like mountains with a yellow background). I find it easiest to open the site in two window and toggle back and forth between them. Insom. probably explains it better, check out his info for the best way.

Welcome. Started out myself on pallets and telephone cable reels myself. You can get some pretty good lumber that way.
