Has anyone used the carbide tool tips from HF? I am going to try to get to my dad's forge this weekend to make a larger hollowing tool. I will plan on it having replaceable tips. I saw the ones at HF. If you used them. how did you attach them to your tool?

Can you post a link?
Are you talking about the small carbide cutters that screw on? Or the short bar with the cutter braised on?
You may want to check here also if they are the screw on type. You can order just the cutters and screws or the cutters, screws, and bar. He may offer one where the bar is already tapped for the screws. http://eddiecastelin.com/products_and_services

You can also get carbide cutters cheaply from Enco (www.use-enco.com). They are mostly sold for metal cutting lathes but could possibly be adapted.

I find their website hard to navigate, so ask for their free catalog.

I agree with ken of Cary. Enco sells very good products and I have used them for turning tools with great success.

Mike,

I was talking about the straight bar with the cutter braised on.

Thanks for the tips on Enco. I looked and their prices are reasonable. I will call them tomorrow to make sure I am buying the right thing.

I the ones I have braised on have a short shank (about 4”) so they can’t be used for hollowing, only roughing.
Lots listed under “tool bits & blades” at
http://www.wholesaletoolcompany.com/?gclid=CI3MqZePjacCFYnc4AodDAyHdw
They were about $2.20 but I haven’t reground them yet. To attach them I am using a square hole sleeve.
They are made for metal working so I don’t know if anyone has them with longer shanks or not.

The ones from Capn’ Eddie are made for wood and I think you can buy the cutters and screws here in bulk.

I haven’t tried the braised carbide cutters yet so I can’t say how well they work.
Here is what they look like and how I attach them.

since a direct link doesn't work, I found these at wholesaletool.com:

Item 1064-0020

I ordered 3 of them. I thought about getting some straight cutting tips, but at 10 bucks a pop I decided I didn't need any.
