I just wanted to stop in and say hello, I'd read this site a couple weeks before I joined and am impressed with the information packed inside. The site truely reflects people that love woodworking and know alot about it too !

I am pretty new to this craft, but really enjoy making the plans that roll around in my head a reality (or almost real). I lucked into my beginning by convincing my wife that I could buy the tools and wood to build new a new kitchen for the same price as the glued sawdust from our neighborhood big box store. Though I was in for a surprise, I did finish the cabinets and got the tools !

Since then I have been adding other tools and working through my lack of knowledge. Thats why a site like this is really a huge help.

Again, thanks for the site and allowing a new fellow to pick up some of your knowledge.

I'll try to find the kitchen pictures, but until then this was my next project.

Welcome Mark, I get the sense that you are familiar with the term go big or stay home. Jumping into a kitchen as your first project definitely qualifies you for overachiever status.:icon_thum I look forward to seeing your pictures of the kitchen. Nice job on the entertainment center too. Glad you found us and I look forward to your contributions here.

That entertainment center doesn't look like any newbie to me. If you are then maybe I need to turn in my tools! Really nice stuff. Welcome to the site.

Welcome to the site. Glad you finally jumped in! The entertainment stand is beautiful. Judging by your testimony of being a newbie you have great things ahead and a lot you can teach us! Enjoy the site.

Welcome aboard, Mark,

A very nice piece of cabinetry there with your entertainment unit -- great looking project -:eusa_clap - is it your own design or did you adapt a plan from another source (don't worry, we all use plans from wherever!). We'll look forward to seeing you post pictures of your kitchen cabinets -- LOYL is obviously happy :icon_thum with what you've done instead of investing in that "glued sawdust" you spoke of -- great description for BORG stuff!

Be sure to request a photo gallery by choosing that option from the pull-down list under "Other Links" on the main menu bar. Glad to have you on line with us -- hope you are a Gamecock fan!

Wow Mark, welcome aboard. That sure is a fine piece of furniture you built for that big screen TV.:icon_thum Hmmm:eusa_thin .........what are you doing on Super Bowl weekend? Maybe a bunch of us folks could pile in our pick-up trucks and make a run on the border to come visit you down south there.

I look forward to seeing some pix of your kitchen cabinets as well as reading you input to our forums. Again, welcome to the site.

Welcome. Very impressive entertainment center. I have been playing with this for 10 years and still consider myself a newbie. Always something new to learn but that is part of the fun.

Thanks for the nice replies, they are appreciated.

As to the entertainment center, I swam through all the internet searches I could find, so I guess it has a little of quite a few designs. I did put all these designs together on my own plans.

The unit was financed by my in-laws (about 2,000.00 in cherry, boy do I need a new supplier) but before they would fork out the cash I had to build one of the side curio's. I would have never have been able to talk my wife into a project this large. The unit measures 84 inches at the center and is 99 inches long and is built in 3 separate sections.

When all was built, I tried to convince them into taking it to a professional finisher, but they would hear nothing of it. So after spending weeks reading every article I could find, I held my breath and started. (Boy was I sweating) I was impressed with the final result, especially since it was my first real experience with furniture finishing. I used a microtone dye to even out the color then a spray wiping stain followed by 3 coats of satin laquer.

I think the only thing I would do different if I did it again is to possibly use a very light sealer to help with the cherry's tendancy to blotch

Anyway, thanks again for the nice replies and since I now have a camera I'll be posting some build pic's of my new project (another entertainment center) heh financed by my sister in-law.

Welcome Mark,

Would love to see some close ups of the crown molding and the pilasters. Sometimes the best way to learn is to just jump in with both feet and hope the water isn't too deep. I keep a set of frog fins just in case. :rolf:

Hi Mark,
That E center is gorgeous! You have some serious bragging rights dude.

Reminds me of my first big piece. I made an office desk with full size bookshelf for my study a while back. I kept needing places to put all my "important" stuff.

The one thing about making your own furniture, you will love and treasure it as long as you live. It will never go out of style and it will last forever.

I am sitting at my desk now writing you this, and reminiscing in the dusty recesses of my memory how much fun it was to build it.

Youre in the right place, we love the wood as much as we love ourselves. Its a part of our persona.

Have fun and welcome to ncwoodworkers.
