I just joined North Carolina Woodworker because I am making preperations to set up my first woodworking shop here in Greensboro. I am, therefore, a rookie. As a result, I am doing a great deal of research on how I should set up my shop, and with what machines. Of course, I have a pretty good idea what machines I want in there, but the question is which one's do I put in there first. The dedicated shop space is a 12' x 24' section on the end of my garage. I can use roll around machines and use the car park space on the occasions when I am working with large pieces. One of the options for aquiring machines is, of course, buying used equipment. I would like to know where to go to find a used contractor saw, 6 inch jointer, planer, bandsaw, and combination disc/belt sander. If anyone out there has information on the subject that you would care to share, I will appreciate it.

Welcome Cliff! Great group here at NCWWer. I'm fairly new as well. You may want to PM insomniac. He just posted a great deal on a used Contractor saw. Good luck

Welcome, I am glad you could join us. Pay attention to our Buy and Sell Tools, you might find what you need in there. I believe Brandon Johnson is selling a 6" jointer, near your area. and Rick Corne has a table saw for sale. Also Craig'slist is a great place to find used tools for sale. Good luck in your tool hunt and setting up shop.

Dave:)

Cliff,
Welcome to the site. Here is a link to an earlier thread that has several good sources for Shop Layout in it. Several people have used the layout tool from http://www.Grizzly.com that is free and you can save the plans. Sounds like you've already got some good sources for equipment, too. You can get good mobile bases from Grizzly, too.

Welcome to the group Cliff. You'll find a great group of WW's here... very friendly and good advice - unless the advice is coming from me that is    Seriously, you can find an expert here on just about any subject you bring up.

As to used equipment... you have to watch the site regularly and move quickly when you spot something. Used tools have a tendency to get snapped up pretty fast.

Welcome to the Site Cliff!

I just wish that I had started setting up shop before retirement! I seem to be spending a lot time selecting what I really need as opposed to making sawdust.

These folks are an excellent source in providing direction on your purchases as well as a ton of techniques for builds.

Have Fun!

Wayne:)

Cliff, welcome to the site. I am sure you will be able to find plenty of sound advice here when it comes to tool selections. I look forward to reading your input to the forums. Ensure you post some pics of your shop so we can have a better appreciation of the space you are trying to fill up with WW goodies.
