Hello from Duplin County. I'm a newbie to the forum. Just found it a few days ago. A short bio. I am retired , over 3 years now, from the Federal Government after 35+ years where I worked in various positions in NC, VA and Germany as a Computer Specialist. First year in retirement was spent finishing the interior of our cottage on Topsail Island. The last 2 years my wife and I did a complete remodel of the 68 year old home I was born in. We did all the stripping of the exterior siding, interior walls, electrical, plumbing, windows, doors, etc. and and all the new carpentry work except the roof trusses for the new full length porch and roof on the double car garage and smokehouse/toolroom. We did all the painting, interior trim, hardwood floors (3/4"ash), ceramic tile in baths and kitchen backsplash and all the kitchen cabinets, entertainment center and bathroom vanities. We both still have 10 fingers and are stil talking to each other. I converted a 22' x 28' standalone carport to a woodworking shop the year before I retired to do the cabinet work in. When the landscaping is complete, I FINALLY get to work on some fun projects in the shop. :eusa_clap For fun we like to cruise with our PT Cruiser car club friends in and around NC.

I have bored you enough. I am enjoying the forum. I think I can learn a lot on the forum.

Dolan, welcome aboard. We are glad you found us. It sounds like you have been keeping yourself pretty busy since retirement. I see you have already added a photo album for yourself so please post some pix of all that work you have accomplished. I would love to see those cabinets you built. I look forward to your participation in the forums and reading your posts.

Welcome Dolan, I feel your pain. I'm kneck deep in a remodel myself. You'll find some great people here and it sounds like you have a lot to offer. McRabbet is a retired Fed too, I'm sure he'll chime in shortly. I look forward to seeing some of your work. Make sure and request an album and post some of your work.

Dolan, I just visited your album to look at your cabinets. The cabinets turned very nicely. I also like the shots of the master bath and entertainment center cabinets you built. Great job and thanks for sharing.:icon_thum

Wow, Dolan -- What a superb job you did on your cabinets -- I especially like all of the double layers you did in your pantry/storage cabinets to greatly improve accessibility to everything. What's the primary wood you used? And, I also like the nice painted built-ins you've done for the display and entertainment units -- reminds me of a recent unit I built for some friends on commission (in my Project Gallery). You sure turned out some nice work from a carport shop (hope you've enclosed it! )

As Steve D already noted, I'm a fellow Federal retiree living out west in the mountains in Hendersonville -- I retired 3 years ago from EPA in Research Triangle Park and my wife and I moved here just under 2 years ago. I've got about 800 sf in my unfinished basement for my shop and I'm gradually finishing it and have it pretty well equipped for cabinet and furniture making. Welcome aboard the forum and join in the fun of sharing our project ideas, techniques and experiences.

McRabbet,

Thanks for the good comments The kitchen cabinet carcasses are popular plywood and all the doors and drawers are soft maple. The entertainment center is a combo of plywood for the carcasses and shelves and MDF for face frame and doors. My wife gets the credit for the design/layout of the kitchen cabinets. She worked almost a year planning what she wanted and some (minor) changes :BangHead: during construction. My only job was to implement the plan. Yeh, my shop is closed in. It was a double car carport. I closed it in, lined the inside walls and ceiling with OSB and painted it snow white and had the electrician put in 8' double flouresent lights and electrical plugs at all my power tool locations. The shop is well insulated, with L/P heat and air conditioning, hot and cold water, double sink, commode, refrigerator, satellite TV hookup and telephone. And did have a microwave and coffee maker but moved these two items into the house when we finished the house remodel. We lived in our other house on Topsail Island about 40 miles away so the shop was used as a workshop and mini-house while we remodeled the house.

Dolan -- I suspected you used Maple -- I'm looking at doing a fairly large project for some friends and was torn between hard and soft maple -- your color matching is excellent and there is more character in the grain than I would have expected with soft maple. Out here, soft maple is about $2.60 BF for white color FAS vs. $3.75 for hard. What was your BF cost? Again, nice work. Rob

I paid $4.25 for it. It was 1" or thicker rough sawn. I had been buying 13/16" from another supplier but was not satisfied with the wood. The last I bought from the dealer that sells the rough sawn I got for $1 @bf. I bought all his reaming stock. It was kind of odd sizes and lengths but worked great doing the drawers.

You can still make the category for them and then re-assign the pictures to it
