I joined this site several weeks ago but a new puppy and the holidays have kept me more than occupied.
I've been a woodworker since about 10 when I got a vibrator scroll saw. That was followed by a wood lathe, bigger scroll saw, table saw, bigger wood lathe, drill press, and a belt/disc sander. With that complement of equipment I made and sold toys, lamps, school class pins, and laundry carts. Then I graduated from high school. The demands of making and delivering product and studies shut down my shop. Military service, mariage, family, and work kept it down for 16 years. A need to relax required the shop be reactivated, just needed a bigger table saw. Started my 15th century italian cabinet maker phase, needed a band saw, jointer and radial arm saw. sixteen years later became a 17th century cabinet maker, needed bigger band saw, bigger jointer, a cabinet saw, a shaper, a morticer, a spindle sander, a bigger belt/disc sander, and so many hand tools. During this period we moved to Wilmington, NC, there are few basements here so I have a replica of the house for my workshop in the back yard. After I retired I joined SAPFM to further my interest in
Queen Anne style furniture, joined Cape Fear Woodcarvers to learn to embelish the furniture, made quite a bit of stuff. Wife says there is no more room for more furniture, so bought bigger wood lathe. Joined AAW and started Wilmington Area Woodturners Association. Now make different shape chips.
The woodturning club and the woodcarving club both offer a one on one oppertunity to learn new and/or different methods of work. A review of the NC Woodworkers roster indicates that over 15 people live in Pender, New Hanover, and Brunswick counties. If any of those living in the aforementioned counties would like to get together periodically, we could start with a meeting at restaurant to work out the details. If this is of interest, e-mail me by 15 Jan 06.
