Just a quick post to introduce myself. I live in Charlotte and enjoy making saw dust, Everyonce in a while something functional actually comes out of it!
:-D I am going to try and attach a couple pics of the workbench I recently finished, let me know what you think! The base of the bench was made from old doors that came out of an apartment complex. They are poplar. The top is a couple lamanated maple bench tops that were being thrown out at work

Welcome Ed!!! That is a beautiful bench:eusa_clap Everytime I see one that nice, I say to myself that I really need to try to make myself one, it is such the mark of craftsmanship. Great job on attaching the pics. Please Request a Photo Album so we can see more of your fine work. I am glad you joined us and look forward to you input in the forums.

Ed, welcome to NCWW. Your bench looks superb.:icon_thum Can you give us some details about how the mobile base mechanism works that you have mounted to your base?

Glad you like the workbench. The mobile base is a cam setup. Theboard is hinged to the base with casters mounted underneath. The cam and handles have spring pins pressed through holes in the shaft. Makes it nice to move the table around.

Great looking bench there, Ed! :eusa_clap :eusa_clap

Sounds like you really lucked out in getting all of that wood (maple and poplar). What better way to keep the material cost in check!!!!

Thanjs for joining NCWW and I am looking forward to your future posts!

Take Care,

Wayne

Hello Ed, and welcome from the coast! Great looking workbench. Working in a small shop, I have to keep everything mobile so I'm really impressed with the moblie base. Great idea!

Welcome aboard, Ed. You sure did a nice job on the bench and the two vises on it -- nice dovetails for joinery and great choices of woods. I also noted the clever mechanism that you used for your adjustable casters (reminiscent of a Normie design on TNYW), but I'm curious why you didn't orient the drop boards the opposite direction to provide a broader separation between the casters for more stability. A cleat across the bottom of the stretchers about where the rods go through would provide a hinge attachment equal to the bases and the cams could be placed closer to the base uprights. I'm not criticizing, just think it might be more stable.

Overall, a superb bench....

Hi Rob,

When I ws working on the idea for the mobility issue I considered several options. I didn't give much thought to stability since the bench sould be set on its feet while I'm working on it. I do wish I had known about the forum at the time so I could have tapped the knowledge and experience! Anyway, since I work in my garage (and still have to get the LOML's car in the garage), It's nice to be able to move things around!

Thanks to all for the great feedback!

A big Welcome Ed, and I envy your workbench. THere's a lot of good people on this site and a lot of knowledge. You need to be careful , tho. For instance, there's this guy called DaveO.

Dave:)

Now, this is a guy who builds full size oriental tea rooms in a week even tho he's had a knee operation, cherry coffee tables in a couple of days, and a patio picnic table in an afternoon, who has a load of red oak he's gripin' about clutterin' his shop, makes more reply posts than anyone else on the forum and he DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A WORKBENCH??!!
I personally thinks he's a computer figment , mebbe even Max Headroom's brother:mrgreen:

Really, welcome and altho the the knowledge base here is awesome, this is also a place to have fun!

Too much wood??? Isn't that like too much money or too much fun? Dave, if you need to clear out your shop let me know!:-D

Ray, as for projects I like, it's pretty much whatever strikes my fancy. I have a sideboard I made of pine, some small boxes and clocks. I am toying with making a clock with all of the clockworks made of wood. See my post "clock project".
