Hi all,

I have an opportunity to pick up a stack of beech lumber. I have not worked with this material before. Does anyone have any experience working with it? This is rough-sawn, kiln dried material. How does it machine and any issues with chipping and/or tear out? How does it take a finish and what is the best way to finish it?

Thank you to anyone who can offer some advise on this material.

Regards,

L. Nelson

Is it flatsawn or quartersawn? I've worked with quartersawn beech, it machines nicely. It's not unlikely cherry. Sanding/ scraping is fine provided the grain cooperates. If you have an area where the grain direction changes, use very sharp tools or you'll get a rough/ fuzzy spot. I did not have a lot of tear out issues planing it.

It takes oil based finishes and shellac very well, I have not tried any water based finishes on it yet. Nice golden honey color.

American beech is known as a very unstable wood. With changes in relative humidity is tends to warp irregularly and to a great extent. It's typically used as a secondary wood in furniture making.
