I have never seen a jointer or planer in use so I don't have a clue what I am talking about. But, I am going to buy some thing(s) so I can buy rough lumber and mill it myself. Space is an issue and I have been thinking along the lines of a bench top planer. But, I have been looking at this Grizzly 12" Combo Jointer/Planer. I wonder if it can actually do both jobs well?

I have no personal experience with them, but know a few people with the Jet brand and they seem to like it. FWIW, I know Klingspor and Woodcraft in Raleigh both have them in stock. I would bet one of the ones local to you have them as well.

Hey Michael,

I have the spiral cutter head version.

I really like it, especially for the price Grizzly sells them for.

Here is a picture I took awhile back of the cutterhead that I found in my photos that I've posted to ncwoodworker:

Michael,

I watched one in operation at the IWF in Atlanta back in august and it performed very well. They had a rough sawn block of wood that they first jointed in about two passes and then they reconfigured the machine in less than a minute and planed the other side -- it was fast and effective. They also demonstrated a larger model --16" I believe -- but it commands the big bucks.

If I remember correctly, Douglas Robinson bought one (I think Jet) and could probably tell you some about that brand too. If he doesn't see this thread, pop him a PM.
