Hi, i'm Eric. I've been a member here for a few months and lurking for a while before that, so i figured it was time i finally introduce myself. I'm a software engineer living in Concord (near Charlotte), though my office is in Cary so i get to the Triangle fairly regularly. I did a little bit of woodworking growing up and an occasional attempt since then, but i've started getting serious about it (e.g. getting tools that are more effective than a pointed stone and trying to make things that don't wobble with a slight breeze ) in the last two or three years. Up until about a year ago though i was in an apartment so the woodworking and tools i could have was pretty limited. Last year when i moved to NC i finally got a garage to use as a shop, but it also corresponded with the birth of my daughter so i'm still not doing a lot of woodworking.

Unfortunately at this time i don't have a whole lot to contribute to this community as i'm still a novice and i'm not doing enough to generate many questions, but i do get a lot of good tips and ideas reading the forums here. I hope to finish up some house projects in the next couple of months and start making sawdust more regularly.

Eric welcome, thanks for the introduction. I have found that the birth of my daughter opened up many opportunities for woodworking. Kids toys and furniture are so expensive, and generally not well made. The look on your childs face when you've made them something is wonderful and the feeling you get when they say "my daddy made that for me" is priceless. I look forward to "seeing" you around and participate as often as you can :icon_thum

Hi Eric,

Welcome to the website. Projects around the house do count as woodworking (long as there is some wood somewhere in the project). They are also a GREAT excuse for new tools. "... but honey, I'm only getting this so I can make your house nicer for you and our daughter... really."

Welcome to the site. Dave's right, kids give you many opportunities. Bookcases, beds, dressers, step stools, little nic-nacs... you name it.

Welcome aboard and don't be shy -- novices often have great insight that overcomes their lack of experience -- we like to share and all of us will answer even the most basic questions instead of ridiculing the newcomer. Count on it -- you'll like it here and we are happy you've introduced youself -- congratulations on the new daughter and start making plans for building stuf for her!

Thanks everyone. I know she'll be an inspriation for many projects, from baby proof stuff to hopefully a work bench of her own some day. :) I already started the first project - a changing table - before she was born. I was making pretty good progress on it until she showed up a month early, and the parts have been sitting around gathering dust since then.
