Hi everyone.
I signed up a while ago, just getting 'round to introducing myself. Recent move to NC from RI (is anyone from here?). Been woodworking (on and off) and doing home renovations for the last 20-30 years.

A few years ago my uncle, who was a master cabinet maker, got up into his 80's and decided he'd had enough. Pulled me aside at a family reunion and asked if I wanted ALL his tools. I got everything in his shop for a song. He and I towed it home to RI (from PA) and there it sat for the last few years. Too much work, not enough play (call me dull jack). I debated on whether or not to pay the movers to haul it down here. I'm very glad I did. My shop is now a 2 car garage instead of a full basement but I wont have to worry about building Adirondack chairs and not being able to get them outside anymore !

Here's what he gave me: Added to what I already had, There's not much I shouldn't be able to do?
* Shopsmith V with every accessory attachment known to man
* Delta contractor saw. I added a 52" UNIfence and side table- Made a world of difference!
* Delta 14 BandSaw
* Numerous routers and Bits/Bit sets - 2 Bosch, 1 Hitachi, 1 Freud, 1 PorterCable(table mounted)
*Leigh Dovetail Jig
*Biscuit cutter, Beltsander,
* Every issue of Woodsmith and Woodworkers Journal, I've continued them so I have every issue of both to current issue
* 100's of woodworking books
* Boxes and boxes and boxes of misc tools, gadgets, supplies.

I'm currently working on a Walnut hall table for my wife(woodsmith #138). Started it about a year ago (with a UPS bundle from Steve Wall- Now I can drive there! woo hoo!) and I'm determined to complete it and show it off to all you nice folks.

Thanks for having me.

Hey Dull Jack! welcome to the crowd! you are right, it seems very few people are from here! LOML actually grew up here in Fayetteville, but can often be heard to claim New Orleans as home.

Welcome Larry,

I finally get to meet one of the fifty-two people that actually live in RI:lol:.

Just kidding, I got to stay in Newport at a B&B when I got married in '97, I really loved it. But just blink and you can miss the state:wink_smil. It's good to have you with us, feel free to add, or join in on, any posts...opinions and thoughts are gladly accepted.

Jimmy:)

Welcome to the site, Larry! I'm not a native of Rhode Island, but lived and worked there for 10 years (1975 - 1985). Lived in the Cowesett section of Warwick on Spencer Avenue in a nice 1920's vintage center chimney Colonial with a 20' x 40' pool in the back overlooking East Greenwich Bay. Commuted 17 miles south to EPA's Narragansett Research Lab off South Ferry Rd (opposite Beavertail) and loved watching all of the beautiful sailing craft coming in and out of the Bay, including a direct views of America's Cup 12-M yachts and the Tall Ships celebration in 1976. Loved it except for the weather (e.g., Blizzard of '77). Would love to hear more about your roots there...

Happy to have you here on the site -- we've got great people and loads of resources to dig into -- check the albums and libraries...

Rob, I know Beavertail well. Spent many a summer day there scubadiving. One of the last dives I did was a night dive with my brotherinlaw and we caught the biggest lobster I ever ate. A 3 pounder (the ones that bite you seem to taste better?).

Until the move to NC I lived my entire life in RI. Grew up in Scituate, lived most of my adult life in Cumberland. Worked in Quincy, Ma for last 15 yrs. Came here to get away from the nasty New England winters and try to live a more relaxed pace of life. So far, NC suits me and those goals just fine.

Blizzard of '78 BTW. Been there done that.

Didn't need to experience drought - but hey it's the hard times that make the good times good.

BTW: Thanks for the welcome folks, I sense that maybe I should try to get some pictures uploaded?

thought it was 78. absolutely covered my dad's 70 bronco, and the oldsmobile cutlass was only barely just a mound in the yard. actually miss those sorts of experiences --- and the SKIING!

Larry,

Welcome to the site! I'd have to say that I am very impressed. Your first post is probably the biggest gloat I've ever seen (all of the "new to me" tools and the "shop downgrade" to a two-car garage). :rotflm:

This is a great group of folks. Like many others said, WE NEED PICTURES. I really look forward to your input and seeing some of your work (and the tiny shop). ;-)

PS: Rhode Island is neither a road or an island? :dontknow: :lol:

Welcome Larry! I call my parents all the time to check on the weather up North (they live in NH) and they tell me about all the snow. I laugh and tell them how great it is here (even with the drought). I look forward to seeing some pics and congrats on the tool score and the shop!

My office mate at the EPA lab and I took separate dives on a 2-man submarine off the Delware coast during a field investigation of ocean disposal of sewage by the City of Philadelphia -- he grabbed a 16-1/2 pound lobster from an old piece of culvert in 200+ feet of water and it fed nearly 20 people (thermidor)! He and I used to gather our limits of bay scallops skin diving in the coastal ponds, too.

Until the move to NC I lived my entire life in RI. Grew up in Scituate, lived most of my adult life in Cumberland. Worked in Quincy, Ma for last 15 yrs. We're glad to be in NC, too -- nearly 23 years now.

Sorry 'bout the date -- at my age it's a miracle I can remember much! We had nearly 45" that buried us for 6 days.

Didn't need to experience drought - but hey it's the hard times that make the good times good.

BTW: Thanks for the welcome folks, I sense that maybe I should try to get some pictures uploaded?

Added some memorable comments :biggrin:

Welcome, Larry.

I've traveled all over RI,(took most of a day!):wwink:
and used to have a distributor in Cumberland in the old mill there. Nice area in the spring, summer & fall. Good people up there as here.

You'll enjoy this bunch. "Friendly" is the mantra here.
