Hello all...

Long time lurker, first time poster... :lurk:

As you can tell, I joined NCW about a year ago and occasionly read some posts, but did most of my posting on Woodnet. I decided to try and get a more local feel to the forums I frequent so here I am...

The woodworking bug bit me in college during the early 90's at NC State... I took the woodworking class at the Crafts Center and the rest is history.. Right now my projects are more "home improvement" based (crown molding & trim, hardwood flooring, decks, sink vanities, the occasional bookshelf) but I hope to get into real woodworking soon in the future. I'm tired of being limited to lumber at the Big Orange. It is difficult when most of my garage is consumed by the multitude of bikes, riding toys, and sports equipment of my 3 and 5 year old boys. Toolwise, I currently have the "basics"... table saw, miter saw, jigsaw, circular saw, router set, air compressor, nail guns... It is enough for what I do now. Hopefully in the future I will be able to pick up what I like to call the "big four".. planer, jointer, bandsaw, drill press. I guess I will have to sacrifice my car being in the garage when I get the big four...

I am currently a Sr. Mechanical Engineer for a company that makes in-ground irrigation products. I use Pro-Engineer at work to do design changes and analysis on small plastic parts. I have used Pro-E to model up a few woodworking projects before I built them... it works great seeing it in 3D before building it. Too bad the software is only about $4500. I am also a Certified Irrigation Designer and Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor (Through the Irrigation Association) and have done quite a few irrigation designs and installs.

I look forward to asking and returning questions on a more "Local" Forum...

Hey Phil great to have you with us. I do believe that we have conversed (or at least agreed) over some irrigation issues brought up over at WN. You work for Hunter, right? There is no reason to be stuck with BORG wood. There are many sawyers in the membership that would love to provide you with all the wood you can handle at some great prices. And if you stick around long enough you'll get a bad WGD infection and have the "Big Four" before you know it    If you ever need anything many of us are just down the road. I look forward to your input in the forums.
Dave:)

The sharing is fun and a couple of posts will make you Discount Qualified so you can accelerate the acquisition of the "Big Four".

Enjoy,
Roger

Greetings Phil, looks like you and I have a lot in common. I'm in Apex with 4 and 6 year old boys, use my work install of AutoCAD/ADT/Revit/SketchUp to model projects, haven't completed your big four tools yet either, and also haven't parked my car in the garage since November!

My lumber solution is usually to drive to the Hardwood Store of NC in Gibsonville, although Klingspore, Capital City Lumber, East Wake Hardwoods, and Raleigh Hardwood Center also have good selections if you consider the savings in drive an offset for price. Even better prices get posted here almost weekly, but I've yet to follow up on them.
