So a neighbor had a big maple tree fall two weekends ago. As I've driven by I have constantly thought "self, you really need to stop and ask him for some of that tree". Well today I listened. These are two pieces I picked up with the main part of the trunk still there. Woodwrangler has already said he'd like some, but if anyone has a chainsaw and some time this afternoon we can get more ;-)

All I've gotta say are these things are HEAVY!!!!! Should I paint the ends w/ some old latex paint we have? I don't want to put too much into them b/c I really have no use for them except passing them on.

If you guys are cutting it up I would like some. We may have to activate the NCWW express to get to me. Definitely seal the ends with some thing

Latex paint doesn't work (BTDT). You need something flexible and waterproof, like Anchorseal or the Sealtite end grain sealer from Klingspors. I have used the Sealtite on red oak with good results, but have yet to try it on Maple. I don't know if pruning spray would work, but would be hard or impossible to remove (altho no worse than latex),

Nick, My neighbors told me that I could get whatever I wanted but I don't have a chainsaw and the rest of the tree is still, well, a tree. These are the only two chunks I could grab and I could barely get these in the back of the van.

Mark,
If it's nothing or latex which should I do? I have no where to store these and would need to get them to whom ever wanted the ASAP. They are too large for me to dip in parrifin wax and I don't have a need for anchorseal or anything equivalent.

Got chain saw? I've got access to enough blanks to last you a long while
. :-D

I've got those two huge chunks in the van now, I've got a pic of whats left to be cut up that I'll post later. Now if we can just get a good chainsaw ;-)

So...about the latex paint, is it better than nothing?

Sorry it took me so long to reply. Ditto what DaveO said: Anything to slow down the moisture loss out the end grain will help. I do know that only one coat of latex doesn't help over the long run, so whoever gets them may want to reseal.
Got a chain saw but am busy wearing out the blade trying to get some 10' x 18"d red oak logs down bandsaw size. I am losing about 3" on the outside where borer beetles have gotten to it (been on the ground too long) but the heart is still solid.
Week started with cutting up a 75' pine that blew down in the windstorm a couple weeks ago.

Good luck and hope someone can make use of that maple.

I'm not really painting...more like dumping a ton of paint on and smearing it around w/ the brush, after that dries I'm doing it again, and then again. So they'll end up with three THICK coats of paint, hopefully that'll help some!
