FS: Delta 17-600 Variable Speed Drill Press

I am offering up a Delta 17” VS drill press – model 17-600. Serial number 1445038 manufactured in 1967.

The Good
All parts are present and accounted for
Machine has been completely disassembled and all parts were cleaned/blasted and painted.
¾ HP 3 phase dual voltage Delta motor with a VFD and controls and potentiometer for infinite VS
All new spindle and motor bearings
Production table with T-slots and coolant trough.
Table has a medium arc of shame that has been filled with JB Weld – not invisible but functional
Table raising mechanism
New belt
Came to me with a shop made top cover for the belt guard
Comes with an almost complete spare front reeves drive assembly and a used belt



The Not So Good
Belt cover has been blasted but needs painted and assembled

The Bad
I’m selling because I’m not smart enough to properly assemble the front reeves drive mechanism and I am tired of fooling with it. I’m sure this is a 30 minute job for someone who has experience with these – I don’t and I don’t know anyone that does.

I have a total of $885 into this machine and would be willing to forego all my labor and sell for that amount. If you have and would prefer to use a single phase motor I am willing to remove the motor and VFD and reduce the price by $100. If you are not interested in the spare VS parts - take another $50 off. Without the motor, VFD and spare parts the total price would be $735.

Rick, I'm a bit confused why you're even messing with the Reeves Drives system? If you have a VFD on this, that's the purpose of the Reeves Drive, to give a single speed motor speed variability! So why not pull the Reeves Drive off, put on two V-pulleys and just run with the VFD? That should give you all the speed variability you need plus it should be better than the Reeves Drive!

Michael - you make a good point - although I'm not sure it is as simple as pulley replacement. I am going to check that out. It currently has a 3 phase motor - because that is what I had and I wanted to stop the cash bleed on this project :)

OK I took a quick look and, as expected, converting to a v-belt machine is not that easy. The VS spindle has a splined shaft which would require a splined pulley. Standard Delta pulleys don't have splines - they are key driven. Also the head ad bearing retaining are a bit different. Not saying it can't be done just not easy
