Too many times we hear of power tool makers doing something wrong, so how about something right?

On Thursday of last week I broke the tool rest off my Delta Midi Lathe, (don't ask how, just know it was stupidity on my part). The lathe remains under warranty, so I called their 800 number asking for a replacement part and was told, no problem and that it would arrive within 5 to 7 "working" days.

Imagine my shock when it ariived today, just two and a half "working" days later. My hat is off to Delta, what a quick response!

Cool -- I have had good CS from Delta also.

Now, always remember to do a test spin before switching on the lathe!!! :eusa_naug

Glad to hear it. I have yet had to call for any warranty service on any of the tools I have, but it is good to know that it works when you need it.

Glad to hear they took care of it for you. If you don't mind sharing the cause, I would appreciate knowing the don'ts as a new rookie lathe owner.

I'm guessing that he didn't manually turn the piece to be sure it cleared the tool rest before he turned on the lathe. Of course, that's just a guess. You always want to do this, even if you are "sure" it will clear" because sometimes you get a nasty surprise.

All of the guesses are somewhat close, but here's the scoop.

I ALWAYS TURN THE PIECE BY HAND BEFORE STARTING THE LATHE. Mama didn't raise a bright boy, but she didn't raise a stupid one either!

While trying to work inside a bowl with a bowl gouge, for some reason the gouge dug in, hung up in the wood, slid along the tool rest and came to rest under the tool rest, hitting the post the rest sits on. The break occured at the junction of the tool rest and the post.

Other than the rest breaking, my wrist then came down hard on the bed of the lathe. It hurt like you know what, but no damage to me.

I've never seen this happen before, but it points out the need to ALWAYS be cautious when working around power tools!
