Make it as big or as small as you want it ---> http://shopsmith-tool-hunter.blogspot.com/2008/05/shop-made-lathe.html

What more does a store bought lathe have to offer, besides trouble?

I'm afraid Jeff is about to make a turn here :nah:- or at least he's becoming an enabler. :gar-Bi
As much as he purports to dislike turning at least he's a good sport about it. :icon_thum

I'm of the opinion if you add a motor to that belt and pulley you will find much more pleasure from that lathe.:eusa_danc:rotflm:

Having traveled this path, one piece of advice I will give you is that if you have the slightest interest in general turning, don't set the bar too low. I swore I was just interested in spindles as parts and this would just be another machine. I find myself doing a few bowls as well and really enjoying that. Anyway, get something with reasonably standard fittings, like a #2 MT and 1" 8TPI spindle (there are others that are reasonable choices, but that is the most common on smaller lathes). Don't go below 1/2 HP.
