First try at a natural edge bowl

My first try at a natural edge bowl. Red maple. The blank had some punky spots on the edges, so it made sense to try it "backwards" instead.

The bark didn't want to stay on. Do you use CA glue if you want to keep it?

Finish is beeswax in walnut oil.

The surest way to keep the bark on is to cut the tree when the sap is down, between Thanksgiving and Valentines Day. CA will help if applied to both the inside and the outside of the bowl blank, if and when you have no control over when the tree was felled. However, shrinkage may cause some/most of the bark to separate from the wood, eventually.

i like the way you kept all the heart wood showing. Nice looking bowl. About how big is it?

It is 10'' across the wings and 8'' the short way. I was surprised the measured difference wasn't greater.
