First Attempt at Cabinets

This is my first attempt to build a cabinet. My wife wanted one for her sewing equipment and has decided that she wants to paint it. Let me know if you have any suggestions for improvement. My plan is to build some more cabinets for my garage for tool storage, but I won't use Baltic Birch ($$$$). I am going to make upper cabinets for large item storage and lower cabinets with full extension drawer stacks for smaller items.

That looks great for your first attempt!. Keep up the good work!. the only change I would make is dovetailing the drawer box, but thats dependent on how much abuse itll see. as a sewing cabinet, probably not alot.

Would dovetails cut correctly in plywood? My research was mixed.

Yes, I built a machinist tool box in plywood that was fully dovetailed. It has held up well after 30 years of hard use.

If you hand cut the dovetails I think they will work in plywood. But when I cut them with a router, I got usable results by back cutting but only when I used baltic birch. Lesser plywood broke up.

I think your cabinet looks good. I recently made a chest of drawers with plywood drawers and I used little through tenons - dominos - to make the drawers. If you have the tool it works well and is pretty quick. A plunge router would do it but take more time. The joint you used is fine. Even just using glue and brads will work. If you are putting on false fronts pocket screws would not show and are strong and quick.

Great job! Can't believe you made it out of Baltic Birch. Ouch! That can definitely get expensive.

Yeah, I won't do that again. It was nice to have something that stable for my first attempt, but as I got into it, I can clearly see that it was unnecessary.

I appreciate the comments and encouragement.
