Need Advice Finishing Tiger Wood

Im helping a friend build a jewelry box out of tiger wood and am looking for advice on finishing it, given how oily it is.
Besides a rubdown with DNA beforehand, what material and process?
Also it didnt come out of the planer with a great surface finish, so suggestions on grain filling appreciated.

Thanks --

Tiger wood or Tiger Woods?
I read that title quickly and wondered why you might want to finish (off?) the well known golfer. And if so why you might post publically about it.:D:oops:

Then I read the post and was relieved to realize what your actual question was. Sorry I have no suggestions.

Surprised it didn't survive planing. I had some awhile ago and I'm not sure I did any more surface work after planing in a 735 with straight blades.. Finished it with OSMO which I was pleased with. You may remember it from the tissue boxes I had donated to the picnic.

I built a box recently with African Zebrawood. I found that putting the boards in the planer at an angle helped the tearout quite a bit, and take very light cuts. I also switched direction of the boards occasionally since the grain is so complicated. Then lots of sanding starting at 80 or 120 grit. I finished mine with hard wax oil.

It's not really tearout, just a roughness along some of the darker colored grain, Yes those boxes were very nice.

Shellac like Richard said but, I like to do 2-4 coats of shellac, then lacquer over it. Makes the finish more resistant. The shellac just adds a nice depth to tigerwood
....... love tigerwood, such a nice wood
