I wanted to post the final product I came up with.
The display with the red background was the original I saw on the web.
The display I made was made for a Civil War Officer's Sabre.
I wanted to thank the people who helped me come up with this.
I was going to build a box of walnut or figured maple.
Jeff...., your suggestion to keep the case plain to draw the attention to the sword was excellent. thanks. It made me remember this was for a friend's families heritage, not for my display.
McRabbet, I used a modified version of your handle idea. I have a 6" long 1/4 round dado for a finger pull area on the bottom of the door.
The hinge hardware is not seen except if you look down from the top.
Christopheratan...My lighting dilemma was solved when the person I'm making this for told be he installed track lighting on the ceiling.

PS...the Blue background was not a mistake. Yes his gr.gr grandfather was a yankee.....
