Man what a bear. I used a bowl makers adze and a broadaxe to rough out the white oak keel for the boat in the works. To give an idear about the size the keel is 8.5" wide and 5.5" thick and over 12 feet long. The bow and stern will be 4 feet long and will be scarfed together using iron roves.

I still have about 4 more hours of chopping to get it to the final dimension on the bottom side then another 4 hours on the top before I sand and set into place.

Looking good Kyle.:icon_thum Looks like you picked about the hottest time of the year to be doing that sort of work. Good luck with the project and I look forward to seeing the WIP pix.

Kyle, that looks like a whole lotta work..by hand...outside in the heat. Impressive.

I can only imagine what that would look like if I attempted to hand shape it. How do you keep your reference line as you work your way down the piece? Do you mark center top and bottom outsides then use a straightedge as you proceed?

i know this is crazy.. but basically eyeball the keel right nowThats the way the original makers did it. Once totally ready to finish sand I will run a string to make sure nothing is seriously off. The attachment of the bow and stern require a plumb line to insure its in line.

That's just cool! So... is the piece that you just made what you see in the bottom of the boat in this pic?

20 ft with a keel like that sounds like you're going blue water or white water. Impressive!!:eusa_clap

Monty,

Thats the boat. The keel and bottom 2 strakes are white oak and top strake is Pine or something similiar. It will have 4 oars and riggin to mount a sail.
