Finally maxed out my mill

Well been waiting for just the right sized log to max out my woodmizer.

I hit the limit today with around a 40" small end Pecan log. Pecan is member of the Hickory family and pretty rough on bands, it'll set bands on fire. I had to sharpen a few bands to almost a 0 degree hook angle, with water and Joy dish washing soap lube, I was able to creep the blade along through the 28"sq cant without stalling the engine. For those of you who have sawed with a woodmizer you'll appreciate that I had to raise the cant over the bed stop blocks and push the cant over on to the track a little bit to tweak out 28". Let's just say a 28" sq tree is right heavy. I timed the cut, it took 1 minute 38 seconds for my woodmizer to cut through 28" wide 14' long pecan. This is the first time I have maxed my mill and it just had to be pecan - least I know what the mill will do now... I must say it's quite a good feeling sawing out over 1000 board foot from just one log. Sorry no pictures, didn't bring my camera along today...

Now if we can just get DaveO to post his 10,000th reply, life will really be good, won't it?

Did you slice any boards 8 or 9 quarters thick? Might want to dull some blades buiding a rocker with it. I did a silverware box in Hickory/Pecan maybe 15 years ago, and the grain/ color was superb.

The QS Sycamore rocker is underway...will post some progress pictures in the Gallery soon

Did you slice any boards 8 or 9 quarters thick? Might want to dull some blades buiding a rocker with it. I did a silverware box in Hickory/Pecan maybe 15 years ago, and the grain/ color was superb.

Wow! Ive never used Pecan before but ive turned some Purple heart, that stuff is awful! it dull my tools so fast I didnt even rough it out before my gouge was dull already:tinysmile_cry_t: But the color is Nice!:rotflm:

I have been watching for an opportunity to get a piece of pecan or hickory. My oldest daughter wants a bow and I am thinking of building her one of these:

The info is a little out of date. It says you can find a lemonwood stave for $1.75 to $3. They have gone up a little:

Ouch! Osage orange is another possibility but there is some difficulty in getting the grain orientation and spawood/heartwood mix just so. I have read some FAQs that say I should be able to use white oak with decent results and I have a little, but supposedly pecan/hickory is less prone to splitting and breaking than white oak.

I got a few more logs to cut from this tree, then I'll be done - been putting it off but I'll have to finish it up soon. There is one wild looking three limbed crotch section left. It's way to big for the mill so we are going to open it up with the chain saw first. Wished I had your Lucas slabber Kyle, it sure would make life easier...

I snapped a pin holding the forks to the bobcat and bent the other one - log came rolling off the bobcat and rolled quite a distance on the ground before it came to a stop. I replaced the pins with 1" x 8" grade 8 (Made in American - Rockford IL) bolts. I'll break something else before I snap one of those. It really would be nice to set up around the log where it is instead of dragging the log to the mill.

Little does everyone know - to be a sawyer is to be a jack of all trades, something always needs fixing...
